Michelle Obama tops Forbes most powerful women list
Michelle Obama tops Forbes most powerful women list

Michelle Obama: a role model for girls and women around the world US First Lady Michelle Obama beat heads of state, chief executives and celebrities to be named the world's most powerful woman by Forbes magazine.

Kraft Foods boss Irene Rosenfeld came second in the magazine's annual list.

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton completed the top five.

Singers Lady Gaga and Beyonce Knowles made the top 10 while Queen Elizabeth II appears at number 41.

Forbes said this year's list was based "less on traditional titles and roles and more on creative influence and entrepreneurship".

Mrs Obama had "given a new generation of girls and women around the world a role model", the magazine said.

6. It's an odd list and very US-centric. Pelosi is too low. Oprah is too high. If it's US-only Oprah's
ranking would be justified, but outside of the US her influence and visibility is rather minimal, from what I understand. And good for Michelle, but I'm not sure if I agree with the #1 ranking. And NO, I don't think Hillary Clinton should be #1 either, before anyone accuses me of bias. I guess this kind of list is meant to spur debate and create controversy.

9. Pelosi is undoubtedly the #1 most powerful woman in the US.
This list is something I'd expect to read in People.

7. That just proves how silly Forbes list has become.
Michelle is a wonderful first lady and a role model for girls & women, but most powerful woman in the world??? That's just plain nonsense. There are several heads of state who are women and therefore much more powerful.

I would buy very influential, but not most powerful. Besides, the list is far too US oriented to be considered a world list.

8. Nancy Pelosi didn't make their top 10. Worthless list.
Lady Gaga, Ellen, and Beyonce more powerful than Madame Speaker pretty much says it all. This is a celebrity/wealth list, not a power list.

11. Celebrities who are activists are powerful
You'll notice that Lady Gaga and Ellen have spoken out for the gay community while Nancy Pelosi hasn't. Were Nancy Pelosi to speak out for equal rights for all Americans she could probably have made it happen by now. But, alas, perhaps she's decided not to put that wedge issue on the table too.
