Coverage versus Cost (as measures of goodness)
Thought experiment:

Imagine that congress passes a bill to give federal vouchers to pay everyone for whatever private insurance costs.

Bingo. Universal coverage achieved.

The government would, of course, go bankrupt in short order since insurers would charge whatever numbers they could dream up.



I am all for expansion of the number of folks covered by the government (by, say, expanding medicaid and medicare) but unless the government also covers a big population of HEALTHY people who pay into the system then the government is simply absorbing the folks likeliest to get sick.
