Rove: Obama 'beyond the pale' on campaign remarks

The Associated Press
Sunday, October 10, 2010; 10:34 AM

WASHINGTON -- Republican political strategist Karl Rove says President Barack Obama and fellow Democrats have gone "beyond the pale" for suggesting that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce may be using foreign contributions to finance advertising against Democratic congressional candidates.

In a speech last week, Obama said groups receiving foreign funds are spending money to influence American elections.

Rove says Democrats have no evidence that the chamber is violating the law by using foreign funds to pay for its campaign activities. The chamber doesn't disclose its donors, and Rove said the chamber doesn't use foreign funds for U.S. politics.

Rove said on "Fox News Sunday" that the charges are baseless and added, "How dare the president do this."

4. Well that sort of nails it down, don't it
If that pig is squealing that loud about it, it's true.

As many including Sen Al Franken have pointed out, the chamber doesn't have to directly spend foreign contributions on US elections. It can use the foreign money to pay the electric bill and then use the money it originally set aside for electricity to donate to republican candidates.

Thanks rove for putting the stamp of truth on the president's comments.

Does TB have a record of 'good faith', of truthfulnes? I don't know. Perhaps some of you can give him a character reference.

40. Poor choice of words in the context, but -
The paling fence is significant as the term pale became to mean the area enclosed by such a fence and later just the figurative meaning of 'the area that is enclosed and safe'. So, to be 'beyond the pale' was to be outside the area accepted as 'home'.

Catherine the Great created a 'Pale of Settlement' in Russia in 1791. This was a western border region of the country in which Jews were allowed to live. The motivation behind this was to restrict trade between Jews and native Russians. Some Jews were allowed to live, as a concession, beyond the pale.

Pales were enforced in various other European countries for similar political reasons, notably in Ireland (the Pale of Dublin) and France (the Pale of Calais, which was formed as early as 1360).

http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/beyond-the-pale.html

So pale in this phrase has nothing to do with skin color but actually refers to a fence designed to keep the, uh, savages at bay.

34. Yes indeedy!
And I think Rachel mentioned that much of that money is/could be coming from foreign countries.

That's probably why Rove is so upset. Obama hit a little too close to home.
