The Case of the Missing POTUS Bully Pulpit!
Edited on Sun Oct-10-10 03:46 PM by FrenchieCat
BROUGHT TO YOU BY \

For the past several months now, the only time one sees President Obama on Television live
(other than on C-Span), the set up goes like this:

We receive images of television cameras sitting and waiting showing the room pre-speech in "anticipation" of said Presidential speech.

Meanwhile, pundits are shown discussing what he will say,
why he will say it, and how much passion he will need to show while saying it,

and we are told that they will break in as soon as President is speaking. :applause:

SO then, the President walks in ...

(It goes without saying, that any lead-in speakers to any Presidential speeches,
are usually never ever shown on the Teevee where we can actually hear what they might be saying,
because of course, News programming decided long ago that this is nothing
that we should ever want to see....and if we do, too fucking bad!)
:wtf:

http://www3.pictures.gi.zimbio.com/Obama+Speaks+Job+Creation+Job+Training+F4THqNKHascl.jpg

Now, if the audience claps loudly and welcomes the President to great fanfare,
we "may" be allowed to witness that, however the sound of the clapping will be muted,

(((keep the noise down guys!)))

But most likely, the television commentator begins to speak to again inform us of exactly why the President is about to speak, and exactly what he will say, and the real motive behind the entire appearance.

Finally, POTUS begins to speak... :bounce:

http://www4.pictures.gi.zimbio.com/Obama+Speaks+Job+Creation+Job+Training+HjVcRnX6IWCl.jpg

and so, after anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes of whatever the President is saying...

without fail, the news reader starts to talk over the Prez,
to remind viewers of what he has just said, and let us know that if anything else is said
of importance to us, they will come back to it...(Contessa Brewer on MSNBC is especially good at this)

the news then moves on to something else producers have obviously deemed far more important for us,
like the Weather,.....Because, do not be ridiculous, of course, we couldn't want to hear the President's words right before an election! After all, he's no Karl Rove, or Sarah Palin, or a pastor threatening to burn the Quoran, or a commercial!

Or we get a set of pundits to "discuss" the President....

Sometimes they are from the President's "side"....

or sometimes from the opposition side:

What's that you say?
That's just the way it is?

Me thinks some of us should start calling and writing to these television stations,
and informing them that they are not only being disrespectful,
dismissive and insulting to their viewers, but they appear quite unpatriotic as well,
and the smell of a specific agenda that includes not allowing the President
of the United States to appear for any length of time on Television in any capacity!

Then we shrug and simply realize, thank goodness C-Span is there...
But even with that news, the only reason POTUS might be shown there,
is if Congress is in recess, otherwise, you might just have to catch him on C-Span 3.

But we do take comfort that there's always CNN-Live or Whitehouse.gov....
if you have a computer, that is!

I opine that it is a disgrace!
that the President is more often talked about(usually in the negative sense)
on television, than actually shown talking in order to be listened to.

But it is a fact that this President no longer has a bully pulpit,
and if we were to think back,
we would acknowledge that he hasn't had one for quite some time now.

Thank you Cable! :hi:
Thank you Networks! :hi:

MSNBC is leaning Left My Ass. :eyes:

GOD BLESS AMERICA! :patriot:

2. EXACTLY! As a matter of fact, I emailed Contessa Brewer last week or so:

To:
Contessa@MSNBC.com

When you say, "We're gonna have that for you live,"
regarding Obama speaking in NM to people in a backyard, does that mean you'll show the whole thing? Or like always, you'll show the scene, talk about it for a minute, then cut away?

And that's exactly what happened. And re: CNN.com/live, even THEY often list events coming up that they'll supposedly cover live, but when the time comes, it disappears from their schedule and they don't cover it!

10. I doubt they cut away from Shrub's speeches as much.
Even if they did that doesn't negate FrenchieCat's point about the pundits blabbing out their own narrative instead.

Pundits blab their own narrative.
I am much more interested in what a sitting president says than some member of commentariat.

Great post! I watch cspan or the WH site now. Let the pundits talk to themselves...I especially can't stomach the ones who say what he shoulda said. They think they're the President.

I think that silence in this case is giving them the green light
to do what they do without interference.

16. Corporate media does what corporate media does.
If George W. Bush took a piss, or if Sarah Palin twitters, the media makes sure we are "informed" about it.

If the President gives an important speech, we hear he's going to do so, we see him begin to speak, and then it ends...

Obama should take to rallies twice a week. The local news will cover it.

as soon as Mittens or Newt is elected. They will need the pulpit to discuss the urgency of the Iran War with the American people.

18. I wish it weren't so......
But I'm starting to believe that as weak as we complaint that Democratic Officials are,
we aren't much better...cause as obvious as the media is in their treatment of the
Democratic party and anything progressive, we for the most part, don't have boo to say
about it. Instead, we accepted as part of doing business; in otherwords, we don't make
noise.....none. So they keep on doing it....because in their minds,
why mess with what work?

24. K&R
I thought maybe it was missing because Scotty McClelland took it.
Remember, he could never answer any question while standing behind the podium.
I thought if they were the same thing he took it so he could avoid answering any questions while out of the WH

On a serious note:
I would add, this is not an unusual phenomenon restricted to Pres Obama
When Kevin Rudd was still PM, he went down to the floor of Parliament to issue his famous apology to indigenous Australians for the shabby way they had/have been treated since first contact with Britain.
I was watching it live on CNN for about 3 minutes when the chattering know nothings on CNN-International broke in to discuss what Rudd was still speaking of.
I turned over to ABC (Asia-Pacific out of Australia), no talking heads, just former PM-Rudd issuing the official apology

The MSM is very self absorbed. The commentariat wants to talk to themselves and each other. The same old stuff, over and over. Most of the time, I know what they are going to say before they say it.

30. Once again, we stopped our cable subscription a couple of years ago.
And prior to that, we had it only about a year. Cable is useless.
Cable is a waste of money.

I like to catch the President's speeches on White House.gov or right here on DU.

I am not interested in what some self-appointed "expert" who knows far less about just about anything and everything than I do, has to say. I want to hear the President himself.

Thanks for posting this, Frenchy Cat. You have identified one of my pet peeves -- TV commentators. I can take a few minutes of them and that's it. They are mostly swarmy, sychophants.

you can just hear them repeating under their breath in between cuts -- I love my paychecks. I must keep this job. Don't say anything the bosses wouldn't say. --- I love my paychecks. I must keep this job. ......
