Obama Derangement Syndrome

by BooMan
Sun Oct 10th, 2010 at 12:01:44 PM EST

Rule number one for a campaigning politician is to always make sure that you explicitly ask for someone's vote. It's not normally referred to as badgering. But that's how Jane Hamsher refers to it, and she gets to represent the "professional left" in The Hill newspaper. She even goes so far as to suggest that Obama and Biden never asked infrequent voters to go out to the polls and vote for them in 2008. She actually seems to be offering a conspiracy theory that the Obama administration is trying to play eleven-dimensional chess and hurt the Democrats' chances by asking Democrats to vote and by using a slogan that polling shows doesn't help. Apparently, defending their record is some nefarious plot to hand over Congress to Republican control. At some point people need to consider the possibility that Hamsher doesn't have the administration's best interests at heart.

'Professional left' says Obama's needling strategy to get voters out won't work

4. I'm really sick of people of her ilk...
Edited on Sun Oct-10-10 06:45 PM by liberalmuse
It's not just the far right - it's the far, batshit left that will do us in, because as long as people believe that President Obama should right every wrong they've passively allowed to occur in the past 30 years or else he's a failed them, and refuse to go to the polls because of that, to put it bluntly, we are fucked. Any reasonable person would see that President Obama is doing the best he can according to who he is. This is a good, competent man who is trying to do the right thing against incredible odds. If you don't know exactly who you voted for, you only have yourself to blame, because Obama never left any doubts as to who he was and what he stood for. He is probably one of the most honest and sincere politicians to emerge to such prominence in a long, long time.

I just found out my daughter is actually getting paid money she desperately needs to go door to door for a cause she desperately believes in - to make sure Democrats vote this November. I sincerely hope that all those who believe in health care for all and who have the foresight to see what will happen if the Republicans once again get back into the majority get to the polls. So much depends on it. I implore those slamming Obama and the Democratic Congress as a whole who have the 'all or nothing' mindset to see how devastatingly personal this is to so many people, including myself.

The Republicans want to roll back benefits and every good thing President Obama has done since he's been in office - and to me, this means they want to take away the health care my mom is receiving now. They want to pull back her unemployment benefits - she is DYING and likely will not survive to the end of the year, and these fuckers think that a woman who raised 3 kids alone and worked 3 jobs, and declined welfare is somehow undeserving of the monies she worked so hard to put into the system. I know there are Blanche Lincolns, but there are Al Frankens and Alan Graysons, etc, etc, etc.

The Republicans also want to play the same impeachment cat and mouse game they played with Pres. Clinton. These people are misguided, shallow, self centered and completely in the wrong, and if we let them win, we will suffer worse consequences than we did from 8 years of Bush. Please, PLEASE put whatever grievances you have aside and get your asses to the polls. So many people in this country are depending on you. This is IT.

I had posted that I did not believe firemen actually stood by and watched a man's house burn because he hadn't paid his $75 fee. This completely fucked my bullshit meter which has not steered me wrong - this is the world Republicans want for you, people. If you don't pay your 'fee', others will stand by apathetically while your house burns to the ground. You will only be worth as much as your bank account - this is what the Republicans want for America - to dehumanize - devalue human beings so that they are merely '+$' or '-$'. If you are the latter, you may as well go hang yourself to save them the trouble.

Unless she is just a dolt, she has to realize what Obama has KEPT from happening to this country. I am not even one of his greatest cheerleaders because of the DOMA lawsuits and DADT. But still the alternative is a rethuglican. How can any true liberal/lefty side with Grover Norquist?

She has only her own self interests in mind. I quit visiting FDL last year when her madness became apparent.

43. Can people not at least use some original insults to dehumanize people they disagree with?
Edited on Mon Oct-11-10 01:26 AM by JoeyT
Are people so hard up they have to steal insults from the right? And not just the right, the bottom 20% or so that still think Bush was the best president ever. Seriously, borrowing debate tactics and rhetoric from Krauthammer isn't a good sign.

It doesn't help that it's being used exactly the same way Bushbots used it. To demean anyone that dares claim that perhaps your a specific politician isn't absolutely perfect. Any day now I expect to start hearing "The left hates us for our freedoms!" and "We have to fight the liberals over there so we don't have to fight them over here!". After all, if we leave now the liberals might follow us home. And then where will we be? Not from Obama, of course. As far as I know he hasn't used any of those phrases, and I seriously doubt he ever would. Including Obama Derangement Syndrome.

Best I can tell the Hamsher post BooMan is griping about was basically saying that it's awfully hard to chant "Look forward not back!" like a mantra while simultaneously trying to blame Bush. It's a valid point that's difficult to dispute rationally. After all, if Bush was that bad someone might have prosecuted him for war crimes or exposed exactly how he destroyed the economy in excruciating detail by releasing records on all the TARP and banking silliness or at the very least perpwalked Darth Cheney just for being the most evil SOB on the planet. You can either look forward and refuse to look back, or you can blame the guy before you. They're mutually exclusive goals. The economic mess, illegal wars, Patriot Act, and all that jazz certainly are Bush's fault and his fault alone. We should have never started the "Look forward, for the love of God, look forward! Otherwise we might have to prosecute someone and that would make Republicans that already hate us angry!" attitude. People would be perfectly happy to look back if they'd been led by example. Unfortunately the example that was set was to completely ignore all crimes and coverups of the previous administration...So can you blame the average low or moderate information voter for not realizing the extent of Bush's crimes, failures, and outright stupidity? Especially given a media that was for the most part perfectly happy to go along with it? Most of us may be policy wonks and political junkies, or we wouldn't be here, but the vast majority of people aren't.

So now that Bush's "legacy" has been covered over, ignored, and legitimized, people are starting to forget about it, which makes anyone that mentions it seem petty because only hardcore political junkies actually remember what the hell he did wrong. Seriously, did anyone not see this coming?

There was no such thing as "Bush Derangement Syndrome." It was a disgusting misleading right-wing deflection meme and it is just as meaningless and deflecting and offensive to be used in this way.

I notice nowhere in this thread has anyone mentioned the huge moneybomb last week that Hamsher and FDL had to help get Sen. Feingold re-elected. Booman has it out for Hamsher at DailyKos and continually misrepresents her and her points.

outcome--how would that have helped the public to blame them?

Fantasizing about WAR CRIMES prosecutions is easy.

We saw in the Libby prosecution how much Bush and Cheney had protected themselves. But, some still want to fantasize that winning cases against them would have been a cakewalk.

And that losing wouldn't have been absolutely disastrous--or likely.
