Eighteen months ago...
I thought we were on the verge of crippling the Republican Party, possibly forever. I thought there was a possibility they'd go the way of the Whigs.

What the hell happened?

1. Several things happened...
Unemployment didn't fall...

The insurance companies continued to raise their rates.

They found oh-so-clever ways around having to insure everyone...

The Republicans refused to shut up and go away.

And I'm sure there's a lot more that I'm forgetting.

We just don't seem able to stick anything to them, and have it stick.

They just plow along in spite of everything; they refuse to lose.

Who knows?

4. In any good movie, the villain never goes down without a fight...
... and just when you think you have him down for the count, he suddenly jumps back on you.

Check with me in 20 years and we'll see how it ended.

11. I agree with you 100%
Right after Obama doesn't veto the foreclosure bill, he is going to come to my house, kick my dog, sleep with my wife and then slash my social security.

12. Corporations fought back and created the Tea Party, which the MSM pimped above all else
Meanwhile the stimulus wasn't big enough, the economy didn't improve, and the Pukes blocked all legislation that would have helped. Oh yeah, and people are fucking stupid.

14. Not a whole lot.
Maybe DU'ers didn't post The Big List (of accomplishments) often enough... which, by the way, I understand is now up to something like 17 or 1800 items with items that sometimes begin with "considered/is considering" and "recommended/thought about" as well as "believes/espouses" and whose requirements will soon be amended to include "wished" and "spoke about in a strategy meeting".

... and that force be with them.

17. I never bought into the idea the Republicans would just die out...
They didn't die out after the Great Depression. In fact, they regained their footing midway through the FDR presidency. That was after their party controlled the WH during the largest economic collapse in American history.

Let's not forget Ford barely lost to Carter only a couple years after Nixon resigned.

Many thought Nixon would be the downfall of the Republican Party. He wasn't. Ford was crippled, but still almost won the presidency and Reagan regained it back for the Republicans in 1980.

Neither party is going to die. It's foolish to believe they will because the other offers a viable alternative to the sitting party.

When it comes to politics, Americans will always have short memories.

Hell, Republicans thought Democrats were dead in 2002 and 2004.
