Obama to GOP: 'Stop trying to frighten the American people'
By Sam Youngman - 12/09/09 01:14 PM ET

President Barack Obama told House Republican leaders to "stop trying to frighten the American people" even as he and Democrats said they see a possibility for bipartisan cooperation on job creation legislation.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters that Obama made the admonition during a bipartisan meeting at the White House on Wednesday, producing a chart to show Republicans that "things are a lot better."

Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said there was broad agreement on their side of the aisle about how to create jobs by aiding small businesses and boosting infrastructure spending. Pelosi said she thinks on those issues, "it's possible for us to find some common, bipartisan ground."

But moments later, Republicans made it clear that they want to see a "spending freeze" and a "no-cost" jobs plan that consists largely of tax cuts.

2. I have no idea what you gave up, but I have hope that a
jobs initiative will be passed with or without the rethugs.

7. me too
I never really had much hope for real change. I had total hope that Obama could keep McCain out of the white house. I continue to hope that Obama will get re-elected in 2012 (I am pretty sure that he will) ..

4. As the economy improves - ever so slowly - the GOP will wind itself
into ever tightening knots. I expect to see some REAL, serious craziness over the next year, so far beyond what they have displayed thus far it will make the birthers seem intelligent and rational.

Will be quite amusing if the Dems in congress get on the same page and the Dems in the real world actually vote next year.

5. Who in the hell cares what republicans want.
When the democrats were the minority the republicans pushed their bills thru and didn't even bother to ask the democrats about amendments etc. So why should we care what they want. We all know..tax cuts for the rich, tax cuts for big business. That must be programmed into their brains and they can't say anything else.

6. I wonder if Obama believes in Unicorns, too
Because I think there's a better chance of them existing than Republicans working in good faith.

11. The republicans are rooting for failure by this administration. It is a waste of time
to try working with them.
