1. He has to win. West Virginia isn't real hot on sending anyone to DC to help
Edited on Mon Oct-11-10 08:40 PM by Pirate Smile
Obama right now.

He's trying to win.

I'm kind of ignoring the specifics because  ... I don't live in West Virginia and I don't want to lose control of the Senate.

The Senate will be gridlocked either way but I'd rather not let the Republicans control the committees.

2. I hope this is the last time they nominate a DLC'er in West VIrginia
They should have gone with a progressive populist.

7. So you prefer Republicans?
A progressive populist would lose by 20 points.

8. Not necessarily. West VIrginians are working-class people
They would respond to at "the people, not the powerful" campaign.

This was the state where the United Mine Workers was born.

10. I know. It sucks. I'm not focusing on it because it serves no constructive purpose and just
pisses me off.

A Democrat - even one who pisses us off much of the time - is much, much more likely to work constructively with Obama & the Democrats then a Republican - even a moderate Republican (and we wouldn't get a moderate Republican in WV).

Nelson, Lincoln and Lieberman were reachable. Snowe and Collins were not.

An R is 100% no.

A conservative D is around 35% no.

I'll take the conservative D in the red state and 65% yes.

(That doesn't mean I wont want to pull my hair out about it sometimes.)

3. Obama has a 29% approval rating in WVA and lost the state to McCain overwhelmingly
it's not an Obama loving state. Even in the primary Hillary overwhelmed Obama 2-1.

5. He's losing because of that agenda.
And he's running out of time to differentiate himself in a less abrupt way.

11. He's losing for a lot of reasons, including unemployment
that is around 9 percent statewide, but over 10 percent in over one third of the state's counties.

14. Cap n Trade is political poison in WVA...
And pretty much the entire Obama administration's agenda is unpopular.

Manchin is about as good as it's going to get. He will be a pure DINO on steriods, at least through 2012 since he will have to run again.

He is still nominally on our team and will vote for Reid for majority leader.

It is what it is. People yell about the likes of Nelson, Lincoln, Landrieu, etc, but those are the kinds of candidates that can win in these states. It is either them, or a right wing Republican.

19. Manchin is endorsed by both the AFLCIO and
the US Chamber of Commerce, if you lived in WV would you trust him?

20. Manchin is also endorsed by the NRA!
Edited on Mon Oct-11-10 10:42 PM by golfguru
That is unusual to say the least. Besides Harry Reid,
I can't think of any prominent democrat endorsed by NRA.
I am sure there are a few, just that I have not seen any
Ads on TV/Radio touting NRA endorsement by others.

21. Governor Ted Strickland (D) in Ohio is endorsed by the NRA
and Kasich (R) gets an "F". Yet Kasich has been consistently ahead in the polls, I guess that NRA endorsement doesn't carry much weight when it's a Democrat.
