But we all know which lever we're pulling anyway; Democratic.

The politicians know this. They like it that way. That's why they don't have to give us equal rights for all, comprehensive state funded health care, a living wage, great schools, more jobs, a comfortable retirement, and so on. They don't have to. And since they don't have to, and they can make money keeping these things from us, they keep these things from us.

And still we complain.

I have a question for DU.

What can we do, really actually do, to make it work such that we get everything we want?

Post why and how. Let's get some of the best that DU has to offer on the table before the election. Let's tell them what change we expect and make them do it, and how we're going to do it. Then, let's get it done.

1. The two-party system will have to implode first.
Then, out of the rubble, something better might emerge. The system won't reform itself, and can't be reformed from outside. So, the thing will just have to destroy itself. And, it is, rapidly.

Sadly, there is no practical alternative.

3. I kind of agree with your assessment although I'm hoping someone has an idea
And I don't think I want to be here during the fall, but who would? The rise could be transcendental for US politics, though.

2. Accept temporary minority status.....
We're so enamored with being in power and being in control that we've lost our soul and our core.

We just need to accept the face that while yes there need to be some moderates in our party, we still should not have to accept hardcore republican wannabes calling the shots in and for our party. I'm not saying their voices shouldn't be heard and I'm not saying in some areas a conservadem isn't the best we can hope for.

But we have to stop pandering to them at every turn, soley because it means we keep majority status. More and more "moderates" are going to see that they get more by going against the party and stomping their feet than they do working with it and being a face in the crowd.

Until we (and our leadership) say "Enough. You want to be with our party then be with our party. You need to vote your conscience when something comes to the floor then do so. But you will not get to be in charge of committees or commissions or whichever and you will not hold the agenda of the majority of our party hostage."

I'm not saying it will be fun or easy but we just cannot keep shifting the entire debate to the right and watering down all legislation for the benefit of a few spotlight hogs.
