Poll--Rhode Island Governor--Caprio (D) 37% Chafee (I) 33% Robitaille (R) 22%
A new Quest Research survey in Rhode Island finds Frank Caprio (D) leading Lincoln Chafee (I) in the race for governor, 37% to 33%, with John Robitaille (R) at 22%.

Said pollster Victor Profughi: "Clearly, it is a tight race. There are about three or four reputable polls that have been done at the same time, and we may differ in terms of who's ahead and who's behind, but we all agree that we're looking at a very tight race."

A Rasmussen Reports poll released Oct. 6 showed Chafee leading Caprio 33 percent to 30 percent. A Brown University poll released a day earlier, on Oct. 5, showed Caprio ahead of Chafee 29.6 percent to 23.4 percent. A WPRI Channel 12 poll conducted by Fleming & Associates showed Caprio leading Chafee 33 percent to 30 percent.

Profughi said his latest poll, conducted Oct. 4-6 and based on 492 telephone interviews, used a tighter screen for likely voters, requiring respondents to identify themselves as frequent voters and indicate that they were very likely or likely to vote on Nov. 2.

The poll, which has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.42 percent, suggests that independents were split almost evenly between the front-runners, but Caprio took 55 percent of likely Democrats and Chafee takes 37 percent. Chafee did better with voters ages 18 to 49, while Caprio did best among senior citizens.

1. If RI has a Democratic Governor
Then perhaps Sheldon Whitehouse can be the next Supreme Court nominee. Doesn't the Senate usually give deference to one of their own when nominated? I think he would be terrific.

2. maybe but nothing is for sure with the political environment of today
In the old days, yes, but it's been a long time since a sitting senator has been nominated.
