McAdams, a Democrat who catapulted into the political spotlight after the Aug. 24 primary when it looked like he would be going up alone against Miller, has pitched himself as the tortoise to the Miller and Murkowski hares. His slow and steady pace is paying off, he says, and he thinks he will win the race on Nov. 2.
McAdams told the crowd he's raised about $800,000 since the primary and he's outraised Murkowski and Miller combined. However, campaign finance reports aren't due until Friday so it's unclear how McAdams would know how much his rivals have raked in.
Still, for a candidate who had less than $6,000 in the bank two months ago, his point is well taken. "We are that little campaign that could," he told the appreciative audience.
Murkowski, who is running as a write-in, is trying to siphon off Democrats as well as independents in her bid to best Miller. And in fact polls are showing that she is picking up support from those voters who otherwise might have voted for a Democrat but are afraid that now will help Miller instead.
McAdams is working hard to keep his political flock close, and on Tuesday implored them to "vote our values, not our fears."
