CREW JOINS COMPLAINT AGAINST U.S. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FOR MISUSING FUNDS FOR POLITICAL ACTIVITIES

Washington, D.C. - Amid the mounting scandal concerning the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's foreign fundraising practices, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) joined three other non-profit advocacy organizations in filing an amended complaint alleging that the U.S. Chamber may have intentionally attempted to conceal a series of transactions funneling over $18 million meant for charitable purposes from the AIG-affiliated Starr Foundation to the U.S. Chamber for use in its political advocacy.

The amended complaint to the I.R.S. added allegations based on statements from U.S. Chamber staff. The complaint alleges that they, along with their affiliated charity (the National Chamber Foundation), may have knowingly misreported transactions on their tax forms. The original complaint was filed last month, in September. CREW joined the U.S. Chamber Watch, the Main Street Alliance, and Corporate Ethics International in the filing of the amended complaint.
