and maybe a hundred people showed up-- ready to canvass and man the phone banks. Our local Democratic committee was a bit lethargic in the past, but seems incredibly energized this year. There's lots of new blood and new leadership helping, but it seemed like a lot of people were finally finding some point to being Democrats around here.
This town is under a third Democrat, a little more Republican, and the rest other parties or Independent, generally leaning kinda conservative. Teabagger signs have been all over the place since the summer and the Republican House challenger has plastered the place with his signs, making it look like he's a shoo-in.
But, not so fast... Polls are saying our incumbent, Tim Bishop, has a fair lead. Bishop and two local state candidates showed up to great applause at this meeting, and are far from conceding anything like defeat. They are kinda pumped by it all, and expect good news next month.
Bishop made, again, several important points:
Should Albany go Republican, redistricting will knock out several Democratic districts and we won't see Democratic representation again for a while.
A Republican House would give key committee chairmanships to radical conservatives who have been promising to privatize Social Security and eliminate Medicare, along with many, if not most, other Federal programs.
To that I add-- Speaker Boehner will not help matters at all ,and a Republican Senate will not only back up the House, but will give us worse judges.
Get your asses out there and work for Democrats, even Blue Dogs.
And VOTE, dammit!
(Your personal feelings about the candidates are irrelevant when it is this important.)
