Today's GOP is simply bizarre. Tea parties, crooks, and kooks - oh my! They will be the obnoxious clowns of legislative governance, and the circus-like atmosphere in Congress will be a three-ring show.

Obama will not be able to accomplish much for the next two years, but he will be able to deflect the nonsense coming down the pipe. Independents will notice what the craziness in Congress and will return to common sense in '12. If the economy is better by then, it will make it all the easier for Democrats to recapture the House.

1. A lot of lousy candidates will be swept in and out in 2010-12
That is what happened in 1994-96. Remember Enid Waldholtz, Wes Cooley, Martin Hoke, Fred Henieman, Dan Frisa, David Funderburk, Bill Martini, Steve Stockman and Michael Patrick Flanagan?

If you don't, it's because they were all one term wonders, swept in by the Gingrich Revolution. Ethically challenged in some cases, or in other cases representing districts they had no business representing.

4. Hoke was actually a two termer...
He won in 1992 not 1994 and was beaten by DK in 1996...

11. seriously ...
how could there be any doubt that these clowns are not completely incompetent lunatics NOW ...

Sorry, this is one of the memes people have going here that just does not stand up well ...

It is PATENTLY clear that near univerally republicns are batsnot crazy, power hungry deranged idiots ...

If THIS class, of Palidino, Angle, O'Donnell can get in, two years post Bush and four years post a complete republican control of Washington that was the worst government our country has seen in our lives, with these idiots saying the crape they say about president Obama, with the media TOTALLY in step with them, what would make anyone think they will lose it moving forward?

3. Sarah Palin will be the president and either Glenn Beck or Christine O'Donnell be VP
And we can thank all the lying and incompetent assholes that we've been electing for it.

5. Why do people believe this?
Edited on Sun Oct-17-10 02:46 AM by DFLforever
If based on historical analogy recall that the when the Dems lost the House in 1994 they didn't get it back until 2006!!

I think a counter-revolution has been mounted by the right and re-taking the House is just the first step in their program. And they plan to offset any Democratic demographic advantage with unlimited corporate funding and media control. It looks to be working perfectly for them this election cycle.

but two years later they went down in flames

9. The Only Way They Can Offset Our Demographic Advantage Is By Prying Loose An Important Constituency
That's why they are grooming Marco Rubio to do just that and Democrats are unwittingly abetting them.

15. Exactly my thoughts, going by history, these last 2 years were probably our last chance for a while.
The sentiment of this thread makes sense to me, but sadly, American politics seems to rarely make sense to match the logic used here.

Heck, if we were to go on common sense, then campaign contributions, and television adds shouldn't have any real effect on a vote, now should it? After all, what kind of person lets a fucking TV commercial tell them who they should or shouldn't vote for?!?! But, apparently, commercials, and how much politicians get donated to them by big business makes all the difference! While I put blame on the corporations for influencing MY politicians, I really have to put the brunt of the blame on my fellow countrymen/women for allowing themselves to be swayed by fucking TV ads, and not taking the time to KNOW the issue, and the people they are voting in to represent THEIR OWN INTERESTS!!!

okay, I know it was a rant and somewhat of a tangent.. but it's been really chapping my ass as of late.

19. You made excellent points but forgot one thing
Most idiots vote for someone with a specific letter behind their name (D or R) no matter how incompetent, corrupt or even how identical they vote with the opposition.

8. that makes a lot of assumptions
for instance, people paying attention to the details. Obama getting a strong message out. The media being a fair arbiter, getting the facts out evenhandedly. Fair and fully legally compliant elections. That Dems would have any real remaining fund raising capability to match corporate cash coming into the system.

I'm sure there are others. But seeing as not a single one of those vital elements is likely to be in place, I would classify what you have said as wishful thinking.

10. Naive point of view. "If the Dems lose the House in '94, they'll regain it in '96"

We saw how that movie played out.

When we finally got the House back, a Dem President had been impeached (though not convicted), two Presidential elections were stolen, two hot wars were going on, and deficits had skyrocketed.

12. It depends on how much we lose it by. If we lose it by margins similar to 1994, that is unlikely.
The incumbent advantage is ordinarily an extremely high hurdle (and often insurmountable). The percentage of incumbents re-elected is usually in the mid to high 90s.

In this particular election, the incumbent advantage is dramatically limited by hatred of all-things-Washington (lowering the hurdle). If the economy is doing better in 2012, the incumbent advantage will probably go back to its usual level, and few seats will likely change. If the economy is not doing better, Obama may very well not get re-elected, and that could cause us to lose even MORE house seats.

If we lose the House by a medium to large margin, we will probably need to wait until the next time Republicans control the House/Senate/Whitehouse and preside over an angry electorate. After 1994, the next time that happened was 2006, not 1996.

13. They may not regain it in '12
With the flow of corporate money into the Republican coffers, the Republicans will be able to build an even better voter suppression and GOTV machine. The Democrats may be forced to placate Wall Street in order to get the kind of money that the Republicans are getting. Our democracy is danger.

14. We're still well on track to losing the Presidency in 2012.
If we lose the House in 2010, we won't be winning anything
come 2012 'cause the Republican noise machine will be fed
a constant stream of investigations and allegations and their
media cronies will make sure *EVERYONE* is fully-aware of
those.

Meanwhile, Mr. Fierce Advocate will have alienated every
group that actually puts feet on the pavement to work for
Democratic elections.

16. Then they'll lose it again in 2014
Until the parties start levelling with people about the difficulties we face in a low-growth economy with diminshed share of global wealth and an aging population increasingly dependent on government spending or b) until people start accepting reality, there will be plenty of turnover.

20. Not to mention...
Everything they do to fuck things up worse than they did last time will be blamed on the President, because he's the one at the top, and most Americans don't understand how their government and law-making work.
