Just Coming Right Out & Saying It

Josh Marshall | October 18, 2010, 11:18PM

There are a lot of subterranean efforts afoot around the country right now to suppress the vote of various racial minorities. But a group styling itself Latinos for Reform is taken a more straightforward approach: their running ads in Nevada asking Latino voters simply not to vote.

1. I hope we can capitalize on this and make it backfire.

2. I hope Latino voters take note this is what the GOP feel about all minorities, LGBT also if we..

don't all turn up the result is inevitable. Sure LGBT is going through a hard time right now understandable they want to take it out on Dems, but so did the civil rights movement and they get on going to a brighter day. People have to envisage that sturggle and that fight as it applies to most of us either big business taking hold or bigotry, both a blight to our lives.

3. This deserves national press
This sort of ad is antiAmerican, unpatriotic, manipulative, and corrupt. People should always vote. If you want to cast a protest vote, vote for a third party.

4. this ad is a load of crap
it says the dems had a "supermajority" in both houses. blatant lie.

No one could argue they ever had a supermajority in the House. And in the Senate, even IF you argued that 60 seats constitutes a supermajority, they didn't have 60 votes the whole time. first it was Al Franken's 6 month delay in being seated (he was sworn in july 7, 2009), and then it was the election of Scott Brown in January 2010, who was sworn on Feb 4, 2010. So they had 60 votes for a whole 7 out of 22 months.

5. Oh lookee here!
This ad campaign made me curious, so I went hunting to see what I could find. Who would be so nefarious as to encourage Latinos or anyone not to vote? Guess what I found, the same group of people who produced the Swift Boat ads.

Check out this blog by Rebel Girl:

http://iglesiadescalza.blogspot.com/2010/10/latinos-for-reform-wolves-in-sheeps.html

Hmmmm...Well, of course we don't want to vote for people who have let our community down...sounds so reasonable and innocuous. So Rebel Girl goes to visit the website to see who these people are and to view the ads (English version above). Funny....their ads don't say anything about not voting for Republicans, who haven't done anything for immigrants either (maybe because they never promised to do anything in the first place since most of their constituency would like to deport anyone who wasn't born here and quite a few who were too). It's all about the Democrats. I wonder why?

6. The various media in the Latino community will counter this
fairly quickly. Talk about voter suppression! Good lord.

7. OK, having said I think Conway's ad will backfire, this one REALLY should backfire
At the risk of being wrong and offensive, I assume many of the Hispanics targeted are first or second generation, I wonder if telling them not to vote actually is like telling them to shut up -- not only that, it pretty much says the Democrats are the ones who at least wanted to do things to help them.
