Rollicking Sheheen-Haley Debate Video (SC Governor's race)
Edited on Tue Oct-19-10 10:22 PM by Skip Intro
Wanted to post this link to the video of the feisty debate between these two. Sheheen is within single digits in latest polls, four, five, or nine percent from Haley. He rocks this debate, imho. And this is SC. He got audience applause several times, Haley once, early on.

The vids are only in 7 minute or so segments, so when one is finished, you have to click on the next part at the bottom of the video screen...

I think this guy has a shot at winning, a long shot maybe, but still. He did very well tonight imho.

He drew applause at the end, with closing statements, when Haley talked over her time limit, and was interrupted by the moderator twice. When it was his turn, he opened with, paraphrasing, "you know, I respect rules, and when that little light comes on, I'm going to stop talking." The audience cheered.

There is discussion about this debate in another DU thread, here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=433x482530

1. Thanks and didn't realize the polls were so close....
.... if the President has any of his SC magic left, he needs to get down there post haste!

Haley is the GOP's great (non) white hope and her defeat would be HUGE! She stands alone with Rubio as being one of the few teabagger candidates to not self implode.

2. I'm sad to say that I'm not sure Obama coming here would help...
Sheheen's strategy seems to be linking Haley with a widely unpopular Mark Sanford. I think an Obama appearance would only energize the rw bots here.

3. Yeah .... I'm watching the debate now and seeing that.
Hard to forget those Fired Up and Ready to go voters (after all, that's where the phrase was born) and not wonder about them though.

(lol, after all, they're needed for my fantasy of Alvin Green beating Demint ha!)

5. Not to pick nits
but why is Mario Cuomo called white when his skin is 2 shades darker than Nicky Haley's
and he also has negroid lips and hair? Makes no LOGICAL sense.

And for those of you who are not educated in anthropology, Haley is descended from
Aryans (see links) who were were semi-nomadic Nordic Whites, perhaps located originally on the steppes of southern Russia and Central Asia, who spoke the parent language of the various Indo-European languages.

But of course American ignorance of history is understandable. In spite of highest per student expenditure for
K-12 education, American students score at the bottom compared to other industrialized countries.

16. AFAIK Mario Cuomo senior is all Italian
and the son running for governor in NY may have
a non-Italian mother. Really don't matter. I just
wish race was not the issue in any election. Why
not judge every one by their competence for the office
they are seeking instead of worrying if they have "Sikh"
ancestry or whatever other ancestry.

She was born and raised a Sikh ... something she'll remind you of every 5 mins (which is her prerogative.)

Race is a social construct influenced by ones own heritage ... it's why the President (as is his prerogative) identifies as African America and my little cousin (who looks like a teen aged Harold Ford) identifies as mixed (also his prerogative.) ..... of course when he was five, he went through a spell where he told everyone he was white .... we laughed of course, but couldn't really come up with an explanation for him that made sense.

You know us Americans and our "one drop" and all.

13. Well, being Sikh no more makes you non-white than being Muslim or Pentecostal do.
I certainly think Nikki Haley is what Southerners would overwhelmingly call a "white lady." Certainly she's as white as Marco Rubio, who in turn is as white as both their supporter Pat Buchanan.

15. Yeah....that 1 drop method...only in America
Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 11:51 PM by golfguru
I have traveled to 4 continents and mixed races are the
norm and very little attention is paid to that aspect.

Just think modern man has been around for only 50,000 years
which means 2000 generations ago we were all related! It also
amazes me how fast people get adapted to climate effect. Most
Texans & Louisianans look 2 shades darker than most Minnesotans
and Iowans already, and United States was settled less than 300 years back.

17. A very scientific term

Only in the minds of the uninformed and uneducated
Negroid can be construed as derogatory. Similar terms
are Caucasoid and Mongoloid.

6. Thats a baffling state. The Demographics always show it
should be a Democratic State. But they always vote Republican. Even though Repubs have continued to run the state further in a ditch. I live in NC and I just don't understand it. I'm convinced the elections are stolen there all the time.

8. comment from someone who was at the debate -

By Robert Hagwood October 19, 2010 at 10:11 pm

"I just got back to Lexington from attending tonight’s debate in Spartanburg. The debate wasn’t even close, Sheheen clearly trounced Haley on every measure. Several times during the debate the crowd would simply laugh at Haley’s responses (or lack thereof). If the next debates are anything like this one I think Haley’s lead, whatever it is, is going to quickly evaperate."
