Quinnipiac Poll--Ohio Governor--Kasich (R) 49% (-2) Strickland (D) 43% (+2)
Ohio Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland has cut Republican John Kasich's lead to 49 - 43 percent among those likely to vote with a week to go before the election, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Strickland trailed Kasich 51 - 41 percent in Quinnipiac University's most recent poll survey October 19.

Kasich is leading 93 - 4 percent among Republicans and 47 - 42 percent among independent voters. Strickland is winning among Democrats 86 - 11 percent. Seven percent of likely voters remain undecided and 9 percent of voters who name a candidate say they might change their mind in this final week.

"The race in the last week will target undecided voters and voters who could change their mind," said Brown.

The gender gap is immense: Strickland leads among women 51 - 41 percent, but the GOP candidate is doing even better among men, 56 - 36 percent.

less said about the Senate race the better:

Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, also has made some progress but still trails Republican Rob Portman 53 - 36 percent in the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University survey.

1. Go, Ted. I would really like to see STrickland pull this one
out. Strickland is a decent soul and Kasich is super yucky.

Ohio is a hard place to figure. On one hand it veers toward conservatives like Jim Rhodes and George Voinovich and the Tafts and on the other it will elect a John Gilligan or a Howard Metzenbaum. Up north there's a Dennis Kucinich and down south there's a Mean Jean Schmidt.

2. what the hell has happened?

John Kasich got the State of Ohio when he was working for Lehman Brothers to invest $85 million into Lehman
Brothers which then went belly up leaving the retirement accounts of thousands of state employees
shit out of luck and John walked w/ a huge commission check the size of which he will not talk about.

3. some polls have it closer than this--actually this is the closest the race for Gov
has been in the Quinnipiac poll for some time.

Has Strickland been talking about Kasich and Lehman Brothers?

4. exactly
Some polls are favorable to Kasich, others show the race as a toss-up, but all have Strickland improving. I'm volunteering for GOTV starting at 6 am on Election Day -- I think the last-minute effort will be crucial.

7. I was working for the my Democratic Congresswoman, Mary Jo Kilroy, ...
.... and some election protection work for the ODP and I heard 3 days ago that
Strickland was up by 1 point.

Strickland has tried to talk about Lehman Brothers but i don't know what traction
it is getting .... Hell, Rob Portman helped W outsource jobs as the director of
trade ..... and he is cruising to victory in the US Senate.

The media & big money's war on democrats and the President has been huge.

5. It's mysterious
I keep asking Ohioans, "You know who John Kasich is, right?" incredulous that anyone would vote for him.

But people say they're undecided because the economy sucks under Strickland. I wish they would understand that Kasich and his backers have a long track record of making economies worse.

6. Has Strickland made Kasich's ties to Bush and the GOP an issue?

10. yes, recent commercials have made an issue of this
These commercials coincide with Strickland's recovery in the polls. Hard to say if they're the reason why, but it may be that rank-and-file Democrats are finally starting to notice who this Kasich guy is.
