1. He probably makes too much sense.
Nevada is the conspiracy state. Almost everyone thinks the government (or UFOs) is out to get them.

3. I don't hate him...
Edited on Wed Oct-27-10 04:40 PM by vi5
..but let's be honest I don't know many dems who LOVE him either. He's just not an exciting guy, he's the epitome of the "split the difference" third way type dem that many feel are doing the party a great disservice, and for the most part he's been a horrible majority leader. So if die hard dems feel this way about him (and I'm definitely not the only one) then I really can't see him appealing to either republicans or independents.

Plus as majority leader he gets targeted as the face of the democratic party which rightly or wrongly is being tainted with a very broad brush. I'd bet if he weren't majority leader he might be winning now.

20. I wish they had the foresight to...
...select a majority leader who is very popular and/or from a blue state so that if he is the "target" at least it won't hurt him in an election. Nevada is a red state, conspiracy state...what were they thinking.

The republicans were smarter...picked Eric Cantor who is very popular and in a red state.* Unless Jesus comes back and runs for congress (as a dem, of course) in the 7th district of Virginia, Cantor will never lose his seat.

*Even though they did go for Obama in 2008.

4. From what I've read and heard, it is mostly that Nevada is very conservative...
so not aimed so much at the person, but the party.

21. Nevada is 'conservative' if a State that lives by vice can really
be conservative. Very hypocritical, as they live by gambling, alcohol and 'adult' entertainments. Nevada is conservative like the mob is conservative, I guess.

5. He's kind of a milquetoast...people don't realize he ran for several offices and lost
before his first successful run for the Senate.

That said, part of the probelm is that he is the Majority leader and a target for what people think is wrong in Congress.

And I should say he comes off as a milquetoast...I personally wouldn't want to cross him.

6. The self-effacing manner is very midwestern, I think.
At least I remember a certain intentional blandness in social discourse among the people I met from North Dakota. (I was born there, we moved to Philly when I was 4.)
Things are "kinda nice" never fabulous or god-awful and I've always figured they didn't want to waste a lot of energy fighting over politics (or anything, for that matter) because they might need each other's help to get the wheat harvested before the snow flies. I know that Ed Schultz doesn't fit this pattern.
Then again, I would never assume that ole Harry is really a pushover. He's a wheeler dealer for sure, and I'm not fond of some the deals he appears to have made, but you don't get to be the Senate Majority Leader without a certain amount of brass...knuckles and/or balls. And I'm sure he carries a shiv in his sock. (Well, maybe.)

7. He attracts zero passionate support and is a majority leader that does not appeal to
liberals, indies or conservatives. He is just kind of there. Worse then Daschle and he was pretty dull. The only reason he is in this race is because Angle is a total nutball.

Having the choice between a bruised apple and a rotten apple? Why are people thinking Sharron Angle (the rotten apple) would be so much better tasting?

8. I don't know if Nevadans really hate Reid. Except many Republicans of course.
And there are Republicans in high positions that would prefer to keep Reid as their Senator.

since a long time ago.

Now Nevada folks will get what they truly deserve.....
and what represents them best.

16. As long as we retain the majority
but not a super majority, the specific numbers don't seem to matter nearly as much. And we might just be better off with a change in leadership, as long as its not to a Republican.

11. It's a knee-jerk reaction to Dems in general by freeper-types in this state.
This state, outside of LV and the Reno area, is still extremely rural and conservative.

They hate on Reid for the same reason they hate on Pelosi: 1) They're Democrats in power (hard to tell with Harry sometimes) and 2) Faux News/Limbparf told them to hate Reid and Pelosi.

Hate...it's what's for breakfast in the GOP.

I like Reid and me and most of my immediately family voted for him. He may not be a media-dynamo but, for the most part, he's on the right {the left} side of most issues.

You just gotta hope that the more moderate Republicans--if such beings exist--will get to the voting booth and realize that they just can't get themselves to vote for that ass-hat, Angle.

14. I think it would be ironic if the Democrats won the Senate but Reid lost re-election.
Edited on Wed Oct-27-10 07:29 PM by Alexander
It happened once, to Scott Wike Lucas of Illinois in 1950 - he lost to Everett Dirksen but the Democrats kept the Senate.

18. As a majority leader he makes NV so much more important than it really is
With Reid being a majority leader, NV is receiving so much of the pork and attention. If/when Angle is seated, NV will be not just another state but another small state. Like NM for example. And nevadans will go from having the most important and influential person in the Senate to having the 99th most important person in the Senate. I hope the people of Nevada know what they are doing.

24. High unemployment and foreclosure rates?
Which of course would have less to do with Harry Reid and more to do with the broader economic downturn caused by Republican economics and the resultant growth of "staycations."

Nevada will lose considerable influence in Washington if they elect Reid's opponent.
