Incumbent U.S. Rep. Tim Walz is supported by 50 percent of likely voters in the 1st Congressional District, according to a new SurveyUSA poll. GOP challenger Randy Demmer garnered support from 41 percent of those surveyed. Independence Party challenger Steven Wilson trails well behind with support from four percent of respondents, while independent Lars Johnson is backed by just two percent of likely voters.
A similar survey two weeks earlier showed Walz with a five-point lead. The incumbent cruised to a thirty-point victory two years ago, but is viewed as vulnerable in a year when Republicans are widely expected to take over the House. National independent groups such as the American Action Network (led by former U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman) and the National Republican Congressional Committee have been running ads in the district attacking Walz.
The SurveyUSA polls of 558 likely voters also found that DFLer Mark Dayton holds a statistically insignificant 42-41 lead over Republican Tom Emmer in the governor’s race in the 1st district.
