Iowa and what that means for social justice(A wake up call on shadow money and elections)
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 08:52 AM by Peacetrain
Iowa moved from a blue state to a red state last night in the house and governorship, we kept the senate (just like the nationals).

And what happened here, can happen anywhere.

We are one of the lowest states in unemployment.. We have a budget surplus. We have a growing manufacturing base. All of this you would think would have kept our Democrats in office in State level.

When the turnouts were looking so much above normal earlier in the morning and our GOTV early voting had been working.. I was very hopeful. By the end of the day I had had six calls for rides to the polls

But we had been targeted by money and the tea party. Do not for a second believe that the tea party is fiscal only. Rachael is 100% right on that. The outside T people joined hands with Vanderplatts and the values people.

Our three judges that gave us legal marriage for all.. were targeted and recalled.

This is just the first step, to overturning legal marriage for everyone.

EDIT TO ADD: we also have one of the lowest foreclosure rates in the country. This battle with shadow money that the Supreme Court okayed.. is the biggest game changer ever. And they are just starting to gear up.. can you imagine what 2012 will be like. We are either going to be crushed again or we are going to have to learn to play in that pigpen.

Why this happened will be debated till the cows come home. But when patriotic sounding groups with all the money in the world come after you.. It can be pretty tough.

If you know who the money people are.. like those who self finance.. you can expose them.. but we are in a brand new reality..

3. I was surprised that Branstad won and, truthfully, that Grassley made it again.
People laughed that Branstad would even try and were so disgusted with Grassley and his "Grandma..." quote. How embarrassing.

I think it boils down to the fact that a majority of people don't get involved in politics until the last week or so. They don't live and breathe it like DU folks.

4. And this last couple of weeks.. I have no way to describe how we were
blanketed with commericals..It was one after the other, after the other, after the other.. and mostly republican.. every now and then you would get a Democratic one thrown in there..People could not comprehend the facts.. and believed the lies.

5. Me bad, but I did have to laugh this morning when I saw the photo of
Terry B. trying to find his way out of the voting booth. It was as though AP chose that pose to show us the dork was back again.

What a joke.

6. I have not read the paper yet.. so I have not seen that..
 I wonder how many pay raises Terry is going to give himself this time..and try and target the state workers pensions again to balance the budget when he screws it up. Culver love him or hate him.. is leaving Branstad with a budget surplus.

7. Thanks for your analysis, Peacetrain!
I'm sorry Iowa got so sucked in by the lies, money, and wedge issues.

8. even when the money trail is exposed, will people care?
There were a lot of stories about the Kochs and the Chamber of Commerce in recent weeks, and voters still did their bidding...
