That is the story of last night's election.
You're right: a Republican president would have insured a Democratic Congress (at least one house of it). We are in situation normal, though this time, all-fucked-up because of the craziness of the other party's candidates. But the Gingrich "revolution" didn't last too long, and I believe this, too, shall pass.
