Obama vows to ‘redouble’ efforts toward bipartisanship

By Agence France-Presse
Sunday, November 14th, 2010 -- 8:12 pm

Obama vows to redouble efforts toward bipartisanshipPresident Barack Obama warned Sunday that Americans did not vote for gridlock in mid-term polls as he called on Republicans to work with him, as he returned to a changed Washington from Asia.

Obama set the stage for a key political week -- including the start of a lame duck session of the old Congress and planned talks with Republican leaders, as he returned aboard Air Force One from a 10-day trip.

"Campaigning is very different than governing," Obama said, nearly two weeks after mid-term elections dealt a severe blow to his Democrats and handed control of the House of Representatives to the Republicans.

"They are still flush with victory, having run a strategy that was all about saying no, but I am very confident that the American people were not issuing a mandate for gridlock."

3. Have the President and his advisers misread the election results?
Do they really think it was because the President and the Democrats were not "bi-partisan" enough??
And that is why we lost by such a huge margin in the House?

5. I don't mind that he says that, honestly. You've got three things going on:
Close to half of America seems to think, in polls, that he is too "liberal". The GOP took the House back, because that is how the people voted. And he knows the GOP will continue to obstruct. I think these statements are intended to pay political lip service to these realities. I'm more concerned with what actually shakes out, policy-wise, rather than the rhetoric.

12. Thank you for this reasonable and IMHO correct response
I think it's just been far too many years since we've had a President of the People, not merely a partisan figurehead doing the bidding of one party or the other... he's clearly trying to take the high road, draw all the appropriate lines in the sand, and make a really strong statement, one that is obviously not making it through to some. Also, "policy-wise" escapes far too many, and I find that disturbing.

Go ahead, y'all. Flame away... line yourselves up so I can act accordingly with less effort.

Thanks!

:hi:

18. Exactly, he could not come out saying he's not going to sign
anything the new House comes up with. What would they have him act like a two year old and say the US just elected a Republican majority in the House, so eff off, US, you're not getting anything done in the next two years, since I refuse to negotiate with Republicans.

And they'd be trashing him for saying that, too. Reflecting the Republicans and the M$M.

6. Somebody needs to remind Obama...
That we still have the majority of both the houses.

The new congress doesn't seat until next year so why don't you and the current congress try to get some work done instead of acting like you are already defeated?

26. It will be easier to run with the GOP agenda once the new
Congress is seated. Until then it's best to lay low and try not to take any heat. ;)

And he 'expects the Republicans are going to want to act CONSTRUCTIVELY'? There's not enough time in the day to say what's wrong with that assessment.

9. After 2 years of this sh*t has he figured out YET that there is more to the presidency

than sucking up to the GOP?

Apparently not.

I saw a video on DU that said Obama made calls on the shmoozer phone to most of the newly elected goopers.

This reminds me of Gandhi saying that Jews in Europe during the Holocaust should have committed mass suicide in protest. Gandhi was a great leader but he was out of his depth on that. Suicide is a form of violence against yourself. Why give Hitler a freebie? There was no way to win over the Nazis.

There is also no way to win over the GOP.

Evidently Obama hasn't figured that out.

10. The President's behavior seems very strange to me. I can see
no reason why he does almost everything the Republicans want him to do. Why would a President act like that?

28. Kpete used the linked article headline verbatim (but added the "sigh" prefix).
Nice way to pile on a well respected DUer without bothering to read the article linked...or even the headline thereof.

:eyes:

Oh, and BTW, the mods consider accusing a DUer of "spinning" to be the equivalent of accusing that DUer of "lying":

29. One of Obama's core principles is bipartisanship.
Edited on Tue Nov-16-10 05:17 PM by obxhead
from the link in the OP:

In his chat with reporters, Obama also admitted that in the depths of the economic crisis after 2008, he had neglected to live up to his vows of bipartisanship and said he would "redouble" his efforts in that area.

From your link:

Obama said he “neglected” things that matter a lot to Americans in his rush to get major legislation passed. He explained those things as maintaining a bipartisan tone, dealing with earmarks, making sure that policy decisions are fully debated and shaping public opinion. He can better focus on these principals now, the president explained, because the economy is more stable.

While your link had a bit more to add besides the bipartisanship aspect, it also mentions it was a core principle that he “neglected” and he "better focus on" that principle as well as others.

I see it as 2 articles that say nearly the same thing, just in different ways. In defense of kpete I have seen Obama on the TV almost every single day speaking of bipartisanship. Obviously that makes it a core principle he intends to work on in the future.
