McConnell warns of filibuster on tax bill

McConnell warns of filibuster on tax bill

By: CNN Congressional Producer Ted Barrett

Washington (CNN) - Senate Republicans will filibuster any bill that doesn't extend Bush-era tax cuts to all income groups, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday.

"The reality is that 42 Republican senators don't believe we should raise taxes on anybody, and there are also an indeterminate number of Democrats who agree with that," McConnell told CNN.

"You know how the Senate works," he said, referring to Senate rules that allow just 41 votes to filibuster legislation. "We're going to have an extension of all the current tax rates, the only issue is how long."

<...>

Earlier President Barack Obama spoke to reporters about the tax cut bill.

"I am confident that nobody wants to see taxes on middle-class families go up starting January 1st, and so there's going to be some lingering politics that have to work themselves out in all the caucuses, Democrat and Republican," Obama said. "But at the end of the day, I think that people of good will can come together."

Just call McConnell's bluff.

Make one of them stand up there and protect the uber-riche while they end unemployment benefits

MAKE THEM DO IT

of course they won't because of the decorum and respect of the institution... :eyes:

2. Yep,
Call his bluff and if they want to filibuster, well make them do it the old fashioned way and keep them in session over the holidays if they have to, but make them assholes stand there and talk till they drop!

3. PLEASE call his bluff. Then explain to the American people that we can't afford tax cuts for rich
and those who make over $250k a year don't NEED them.

IF THESE GENIUSES WOULD ONLY LIFT THE CAP ON SSN TAXESthen ssn would be much closer to solvent.
Did you know that you don't pay SSN on wages earned OVER $106,800 a year? So the richest people pay less than the rest of us. Think about the poor CEO, he only pays on the first fifth of his salary, while I pay on 100% of mine.

6. That's a smart way to put it...I'm going to be using that line.
The Millionaire only pays FICA on a portion of his salary and I pay on all 100%. Of course he doesn't pay anything on his dividends, interest or rent either!

I would love to see the Republicans filibuster a tax cut for all taxpayers on their first $250,000 (or $500,000 or $1 million).

8. Undoubtedly Obama and GOP will see to it the Rich get their cut....But still bravo to Pelosi for the
illusion that someone cares for the middle-class.

I am willing to be my fully paid house that tax-cuts for the rich is coming despite this vote in the House for just middle-class...i've never been sure of anything than this. Obama is CLEARLY, and once again, owned by the republicans and will do whatever is necessary to make them happy so our only hope is really with Pelosi and no one else. But seeing as her Chamber will have it passed and it will die in the Senate especially when Obama gets his hands on it (or at least revised to include it for the rich whcih then it will pass and then the arm ringing on Pelosi will put it to a vote and the president will sign the tax cuts for the rich into law). My best guess is 2 year extension for all.

9. Let them do it.
Then hit the airwaves and tell America how the Republicans forced the raising of taxes on ALL Americans by filibustering a bill that would extend the tax cuts to middle and lower class families.

10. It's easy for McConnell to filibuster
because he has no chin to weight down and fatigue his mouth.

12. I told my senator to call their bluff
And helpfully reminded him that the economy is driven by consumer spending, not tax cuts for the rich.
