Anyone in the mood to defend Michelle? The wackos are going nuts & the racist comments
are beyond cruel.

WASHINGTON — Don't touch my brownies!
A child nutrition bill on its way to President Barack Obama — and championed by the first lady — gives the government power to limit school bake sales and other fundraisers that health advocates say sometimes replace wholesome meals in the lunchroom.
Republicans, notably Sarah Palin, and public school organizations decry the bill as an unnecessary intrusion on a common practice often used to raise money.

1. There are certainly idiots responding to this story
Do we really have no other more productive fights than with soccer moms and micro managing local districts? I mean if there is public or parental support for rules on bake sales they will be undertaken more locally as they have been in some states and districts. Net result of such silliness? Not a single ounce lost by a single fat kid. An administration should choose their fights carefully and this one can't seem to understand that.

3. Not surprising...
got a lovely piece of glurge from dear old Dad last night blasting Michelle Obama for her "extravagant Spanish vacation". I'm sure I'll be seeing one about this in another month or two.

5. good link ....
also a good reference for the 'small gov't' dolts as an example of why this country CAN'T have a small government and a super power military (heck, in the 1920's the military pressured Congress into funding nutrition programs because the brass was concerned about the health of FUTURE RECRUITS)

6. I am for anything
that produces healthier children in America. Yes bake sales are the old way of fund raising. Time to find some new ways. The old ways were not improving the standards of health. Our children need good wholesome food for brain and physical energy. We know this to be true. When we feed our children poorly it shows up in society. In higher health care cost, long range illnesses, lack of productivity, socialization skills, obesity and effects self esteem. If we can feed prisoners three squares surly we can feed our Nations children with healthy and good food. They are our future!!!

12. Another thing we're doing more instead of the candy fundraiser:
The "marathon" or the "flat mountain climb". The kids have sponsors and they climb a 14-er, or "run" a marathon over a few weeks. They keep track on this big poster paper down the hallway that has landmarks on it (from your school to downtown and to the Tech Center; or from your school to Mt. Evans, etc). We've done two and they were pretty fun. The kids get prizes for being the first one to Point X - a box of crayons, or something simple.

13. We are more creative
than we think. When something isn't the best for you or our children, we should look for alternative ways to compensate for the wrong practices to instill the right practices. So that good behavior and habits become learned behavior and habits. Like poor diet choices, bring poor results. Good diet choices lead to better results. Funny how the simplest things are major talking points.

8. Instead of bitching about bake sales...
Why aren't these crybaby assholes asking why schools are being forced to hold bake sales in the first place???

9. BINGO! I can understand once in a while wanting to raise money for a special trip or event - but
these schools are having to raise money weekly. Weekly.

10. Trust Parents
a few years ago, I mentored an 11 year old girl, who desperately wanted to lose weight.

I would take her to salad bars and showed her how to read labels and what to stay away from, but her sweet old grandparents bought tons of junk food - Twinkies was a favorite and McDonald's at least 2 to 3 times per week. Then her mom was dating some loser who would crawl in bed with her and mom sometimes.

She gave up on losing weight and no longer wanted me after I found out about the b-friend. Her mom made her quit.

Parents don't always make the best decisions, do they Ms Palin, who feeds her kids Taco Bell frequently... rather than make a sandwich.

11. We already are working to change the bake sale thing.
And the cupcakes in the classroom thing.

Not that they cannot have them (they can). But we're trying to encourage them to think of other things besides food around which to build a celebration. For example, we bought classroom games they can play for 15 minutes or so instead of the cupcake distribution. Or they can go outside to the playground for a little while. The student gets to pick what he/she wants to do. So this bill is not a new thing at all. It's already part of our wellness policies which ALL districts HAVE to have in place already.

14. Leave the bake sales alone.
Edited on Sat Dec-04-10 12:50 PM by woo me with science
Schools have a finite amount of money to spend on food for kids. It just makes sense that they should spend it on healthy food. That is not micro-control or draconian censorship of certain menus; it is merely wise use of finite money.

Beyond that, let kids bring anything their families want them to bring in a sack lunch. Let the schools have cookie drives, bake sales, and anything else they want, too. These things have nothing to do with the daily provision of lunch to students.

The point should not be CONTROL of what children eat, but wise use of resources to ensure that healthy food is provided.

16. S.3307 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010
Edited on Sat Dec-04-10 03:34 PM by struggle4progress
You can find the bill text through Thomas. Here's a link to the pdf of the senate report:

http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=111_cong_reports&docid=f:sr178.111.pdf

"... In brief, the objectives of this bill are to expand access to the child nutrition programs to reduce childhood hunger, improve the nutritional quality of meals to promote health and address childhood obesity, and to simplify program management while strengthening program integrity. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 reauthorizes and improves Federal programs contained in the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act and the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 through fiscal year 2015 ..."

Some asshole lobbyist somewhere probably came up with a soundbite like "Government will stop cheerleading team bake-sales." Said asshole lobbyist was probably trying to kill the bill and probably represents soft-drink or candy-bar folk who want schools to use soft-drink or candy-bar vending machines for school revenue -- with a big cut going to soft-drink or candy-bar interests. It's pointless to argue with morons who believe the soundbite: just point them to the bill and ask them to point out exactly where the bill contemplates regulation of bake-sales
