Wyden: "I'd be willing to go along with a one-year extension so we can protect the middle class."
Here - http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/12/05/senators-offer-different-timetables-for-tax-cuts/

In other "news", scumbag McConnell says "We've had more conversations in the last two weeks than we've had in the last two years and I think that's a good sign - a growing awareness that the power is going to be more symmetrical in the next Congress. And I'm optimistic we'll be able to come together."

1. On paper, I agree, especially if it gets unemployment reinstated, but we know
full well what will happen in a year's time. We can't trust them.

9. McCain was going to immediate cut spending across the board except for military
You are naive if you think it would be just the same or better under a president McCain and a GOP house and senate. I can guarantee all of SS would now be in the stock markets.

5. I'm thinking this is a "done deal" in principle.
The questions are over how long the temporary extension will be for.

Brace yourself for much wailing and gnashing of teeth here and in other progressive outlets. Sucks the way it's played out BUT ... in the end, this outcome is the best of those available (in terms of tax policy AND other legislative initiatives that will move forward).

6. That will not be a popular position for Wyden at home

But he just got reelcted so the will of the People of Oregon is not all that important at this point on the timeline.

7. Do you think the people of Oregon would rather see all tax cuts expire...
including those for the middle class, and no extension of unemployment insurance, rather than see a temporary extension on cuts for those over 250k?

The tax cuts for the middle class are a pittance and they do not stimulate. They are a failed policy and they need to go away. Extending them for a few months worth of unemployment does permanent damage to the economy for temporary gain.

18. Yes. The unemployed here want jobs. And tax cuts of a few
hundred bucks? Do you seriously think that sort of 'cut' makes a difference? Of course, earners like the Wyden family will save six figures, so sweet for him, and explains it all.

8. I just wish they'd be honest about it though...
It's not a temporary extension. It's not going to be a temporary extension. They (the republicans) will never, ever, ever allow it to expire and the democrats are never, ever, ever going to stand up to the Republicans on it.. It's going to be permanent even if it's permanent by default of being re-extended every year or every two years.

At least be honest about it. It sucks either way, but it's the disingenuousness of it all that makes it twice as galling. I'm ready to swallow the bitter pill of the upper class tax cuts being extended "permanently", but what will sicken me is the Democrats acting like it's some sort of victory that they got rolled yet again and also that they won't take any and every opportunity to point out the blatant hypocricy of thought (or lack of thought) that led to this end result (that being increasing the deficit through tax cuts for the rich, but having had to give up practically everything just to get unemployment extensions so they are "deficit neutral").

16. The gov't needs that money, if only to help bail out the states
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/05/us/politics/05states.html?_r=1&ref=us

The good news about one year is Obama can try again next December to take a stand. A two-year extension effectively makes him a well-intentioned guardian of supply-side economics.
