Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 01:15 AM by tgnyc
As I recall, this country was founded on a Revolution.
Unless he's talking about the 3/5 Compromise.

8. Several compromises. Its the same reason scholars often refer to the constitution as a bundle of... |
|
...compromises. So to answer your question, he is talking about fucking history.

22. Yes, I have heard of it. |

Though I did not know its official title was the "Fucking Constitution." Your point IS refuted. you may not feel it has been disproved, but it certainly has been refuted. this country was founded on a war that arose out of a desire to quit capitulating. It was held together after a secession attempt because a President refused to compromise. He said "union or bust." This nation's heroes are those who did not compromise. They are those who said "give me liberty or give me death," those who said of their foes, "I welcome their hatred." That is what this country is founded. But go ahead and defend capitulation if you like. And I will continue to disagree.
In the words of FDR:
For nearly four years you have had an Administration which instead of twirling its thumbs has rolled up its sleeves. We will keep our sleeves rolled up.
We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace—business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.
They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.
Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred.
I should like to have it said of my first Administration that in it the forces of selfishness and of lust for power met their match. I should like to have it said of my second Administration that in it these forces met their master.

24. No, it hasn't, in any way, shape or form. Bundle of compromises, LOOK IT UP. |
|
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 10:50 AM by phleshdef
Its what the constitution has been referred to for ages. There is no argument against that. Its not subject to an opinion. Its 100% fact. And piling on with a bunch overromanticized, founding father cliche' bullshit isn't swaying your argument one direction or the other other.

"bundle of compromises" does NOT negate or disprove that we have another tradition, which is not to compromise, it is to fight. Get over yourself with the "there is only one right answer and I have it" attitude. You will find, if you look at history, that there are many contradictory and competing patterns and themes (religiosity and humanism, more equality and more wealth concentration, more freedom and yet a pattern toward authoritarianism, etc.). They exist simultaneously. There is no "one" answer. If there were, we'd be a colony of England and there would be a separate country called Georgia-Carolina-Sippi.

12. Have you ever studied the Constitutional Convention or the early years of Congressional history? |
|
Those folks had a number of competing interessts and they DID NOT have an easy time coming writing our constitution. Not to mention governing after the constitution was adopted.
Governing this nation is not an easy task, as diverse and as indenpendent as we are.

Did it do what it was expected to do? Who were the major players at the Convention? What were the key compromises that were made in Philadelphia?
