Has Anybody Thought How Feckless President Obama Will Look If His Compromise Fails? |
|
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 10:07 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
Has there ever been a situation where the president proposed legislation when he had majorities in both Houses and lost, not because of opposition from the other party but opposition from his own?
It would be the political equivalent of getting neutered or spayed.
The Repugs would have the House, almost the Senate, and a neutured president.

1. It's a good bet that the Democrats will lose the Senate in 2012 |
|
just because of the numbers: 21 Democrats up for reelection, 10 Republicans, and 2 independents (Lieberman and Sanders who both caucus with the Democrats). If the Democrats lose the presidency, then the Republicans will then again control everything (they seem to do a good job in controlling things even when they are not in control).
Wasn't there all the dancing on the GOP grave just 2 years ago celebrating how that party was dead and over?

4. That was before they had |

emergency surgery to revive them. They are recuperating. Thanks to some of the Democrats.

2. I'm thinking the repubs are going to remove the extension of |
|
the Bush tax cuts and just extend the unemployment benefits just to scuttle Obama's plan, then go for a new bill with the extension for all after the unemployment goes through. This makes them look in charge and maybe that's why the Dems spent so much time in conference with Obama before this all came out.

9. that is quite unlikely. The same group of very conservative tea partying types |
|
like DeMint are even more against extending unemployment because they think that people enjoy the $300 per week (on average) and then don't want to work.

are causing me to have an identity crisis. I couldn't have said it better myself. Not only that, by dragging this out, they (congress in general and the pukes in particular) put DADT and the DREAM Act votes off, maybe to keep the issue alive for another day.
I don't mean to come off as a jerk, and it pains me to say this but from my observations I conclude that the pukes have the dems right where they want them. There is still blood in the water, lots of blood and we refuse to acknowledge it.

5. Spayed. Congress held a vote to pass the appropriate legislation. |
|
The House passed it, the Senate didn't. It's in their court once again.

8. I'm sure if you try hard enough you can find instances where presidents have lost |
|
Jimmy Carter for instance lost in 1980 when his veto was strongly overriden in the Democratic House: In June 1980 Congress overrode Carter's veto of a bill that repealed a $4.62 import fee. Carter vetoed the bill on 5 June. The same day, the House voted 335-34 to override Carter's veto and Senate followed suit.
But I wouldn't get too optimistic. The comporomise will probably pass.

13. No one could do as good a job "neutering" him as he has done to himself.... |
|
I've been supporting Democratic presidents since I could vote in 1972 but even I have my breaking point. I'm nauseous at the thought that this is our response to 8 years of George Bush. Pure unvarnished capitulation.
