Illinoisans: Please Call Mark Kirk's Office and Urge him to Vote for Cloture on DADT Repeal (DAB) |
|
Mark Kirk campaigned as an independent in Illinois, at least in the Chicago area. His major pitch was as follows:
"I am an independent, and I can work with all parties." Indeed, he was almost never identified as a Republican in his ads.
Make him own that. The GOP has made him deputy whip in order to neutralize his local, constituent-driven need to vote as a moderate. But he must retain some independence from the GOP in order to run again successfully in 2016. Moreover (and this is inside baseball for Illinois politics), he has to maintain at least the appearance of an LGBT-friendliness in order to avoid having an increasingly financially powewrful LGBT community in Chicago and the suburbs throw its substantial contributions against him in the next election. It's why he's always straddled the line on DADT, and often claimed to be in favor of repeal. Make him own it.
His phone number is 202-224-2854.
Please note, Kirk has supported LGBT legislation in the past:
# Rated 75% by the HRC, indicating a pro-gay-rights stance. (Dec 2006) # Voted NO on Constitutionally defining marriage as one-man-one-woman. (Jul 2006) # Voted NO on Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage. (Sep 2004)
When you call, don't play him up like a hater. Ask him to do what is right, what is independent, and what is consistent with his pro-civil rights record.

1. I called his office this morning. |

I was polite. I mentioned that he said he was waiting for the Pentagon study. And that the study is evidence that DADT repeal can happen, with minimal effect.
I think...I hope...he will do what is right, in the end.

But as I said during the campagin I believe Kirk despite what he claims will be conservative not moderate and vote against anything Obama wants to do.I believe If I reasched right Kirk has tendacy during election years to act as moderate and then act as conservative. He doesn't come up for relection till 2016.
