Unemployment benefits were never a priority for Obama
Edited on Sat Dec-11-10 10:53 AM by Enrique
I remember recently, after the election, I heard Obama say that it was important to extend the unemployment benefits and I was pleasantly surprised, because I hadn't heard it from him before.

I HAD heard, that it was VITAL to extend the tax cuts for the middle class, which I disagreed with. I don't believe that they have the economic importance that Obama and the rest have been claiming, and I am CERTAIN that they are not the top priority.

What else isn't a priority for Obama? Saving Social Security. Many dems have taken a hard-line stance on Social Security, they mention it often as a priority. Obama isn't one of them. Whenever he mentions Social Security, it sounds like he wants it on the chopping block.

Edit: this is my honest feeling about what I heard from Obama. It's not made up. Someone says Obama mentions unemployment benefits in "every town hall", well I Googled and this is the first Townhall I found, where he doesn't mention UI at all (also notable, John Harwood doesn't ask about it), and he mentions tax cuts a whole lot:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2010/09/20/remarks-president-cnbc-town-hall-discussion-jobs

After fighting for several months, we finally got a small business tax cut bill in place so that we’re eliminating capital gains for small businesses and startups, making sure that they can get loans.

(...)

We haven’t increased taxes on businesses. Actually, we have instituted about 50 tax cuts, many of them going to businesses large and small.

(...)

We want to give tax breaks to companies that are investing in research and development here in the United States because the key to our long-term growth is technology and innovation.

(...)

Now, what we’ve said is that we should extend tax cuts, tax relief, for middle-class Americans -- like most of the audience here -- because, first of all, you’re the ones who didn't see your wages or income rise.

(...)

Everybody agrees that this should be done. All we’ve said is that you get those tax breaks up to $250,000 a year. After that, if you make more than $250,000 a year, you still get a tax break; it’s just you only get it up to $250,000 --

(...)

So the point, I guess, I’m making is this. I think that American businesses like yours are what make this country go. We have passed eight tax cuts for small businesses so far. We have made it easier for you to invest in plants and equipment. We have already taken down your capital gains and we want to reduce capital gains for small businesses down to zero. All of these things are what historically have been considered pro-business agendas.

(...)

We are now saying we’ve giving you a tax break if you provide health care to your workers. And 4 million small businesses out there are in a position to potentially take advantage of it.

3. I don't understand where you get your "certainty" about Obama and unemployment benefits
He talks about it at almost every townhall.

Democrats have been talking about the importance of middle class tax relief for decades.

Likewise he talks about the importance of safety nets and that is the responsibility of the govt.

4. What we're seeing is the ultimate political "Good cop/Bad cop" scenario
Edited on Sat Dec-11-10 10:41 AM by brentspeak
Played out by the GOP and the corporate Democrats (led by Obama) on behalf of the wealthiest interests. Obama's part is that of the "reasonable good cop", who nevertheless makes sure the ruling elite gets everything they really want and their status quo is maintained. It's all phony. The few honest Democrats (and Bernie Sanders) who are opposed to the tax deal outrage are the designated punching bags, to be laughed at and ridiculed by the corporate politicians and their carefully-appointed flunkies in the media.

11. Yep
When flat statements such as 'unemployment benefits were never a priority for Obama' are bandied about on an ostensibly Democratic discussion board - going so far as to create a thread inviting others to 'discuss' an execrable thesis - I expect better than unsubstantiated bullshit to support that assertion. Anything less just amounts to so much divisive flamebait. A steaming pile.

8. Categorically wrong.
I could provide you with a hundred articles and quotes to prove your wrongness, but here is just one to show it was his first act as President, the fulfilment of a promise he'd made before he even got to office.

Obama signs stimulus, extending unemployment
Updated: Thursday, February 19th, 2009 | By Angie Drobnic Holan

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which President Obama signed on Feb. 17, 2009, contains a major extension of unemployment benefits.

States administer unemployment based on federal guidelines, so how much a person gets and how long he or she receives benefits varies by state. Usually, people receive a set amount of money each week for about six months.

When the economy deteriorated in 2008, Congress extended benefits, giving more money and setting longer time frames for the states with the highest unemployment numbers. The economic recovery bill that Obama signed extended those time periods again. Depending on circumstances, most people receiving benefits should get an extension, with the hardest hit states winning extended benefits through Dec. 31, 2009.

Unemployment benefits are normally taxed as regular income, but the bill exempted the first $2,400 of unemployment from 2009 income taxes.

Obama pledged to extend unemployment benefits and temporarily suspend taxes on the benefits. He definitely achieved the first part, and taxes are suspended on some of those benefits. So we are rating this one Promise Kept.

I'm getting tired of people who just make things up out of venom, and never even bother to check their facts. Which accounts for about 75% of the posts on this board lately.

President Obama signed the extension of unemployment benefits late this afternoon, blasting the Republicans and saying the measure will "restore desperately needed assistance to two-and-a-half million Americans who lost their jobs in the recession."

"After a partisan minority used procedural tactics to block the authorization of this assistance three separate times over the past weeks, Americans who are fighting to find a good job and support their families will finally get the support they need," Obama said in a statement.

Updated: 4/15/10
President Obama, who signed the bill Thursday night, praised the vote but pushed Congress — and implicitly the Republicans who opposed the bill — to do more to aid out-of-work Americans, saying "I urge Congress to move quickly to extend these benefits through the end of this year," and "to move forward on legislation to help small businesses grow and hire and other measures to increase the pace of job growth."

15. i didn't say he never mentioned it
and I didn't deny that he signed several extensions. I know that he did, because I benefitted from one of those extensions.

What I said is that they were never a priority for him. He talks A LOT about those middle-class tax cuts and hardly at all about UI benefits. I gave an example where he didn't mention those benefits AT ALL.
