It would be an interesting roll of the dice.

5. why is Harry Reid so afraid to simply require a REAL stand on the floor and blab for hours
filibuster?

How long could an old fart like Lieberman keep going before even his corrupt ass would give out?

8. Because of thre rules of Cloture
A senator can hold the floor for as long as he would like and pass it off to any of 40 republicans

12. Agreed. Reading the phone book like in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington doesn't happen.
A real filibuster consists of one Republican on the Senate floor, combined with all the Democrats, who have to be there, so when the Republican announces "I suggest the absence of a quorum," the Democrats can sound off to keep the Senate from adjourning altogether.

We need filibuster reform. It's way too easy to obstruct in the Senate.

10. I'm game.
Joe Liberman's a narcissistic sociopath. Anything to marginalize him, including courting one of the few moderate Repubs left, is on the table in my view.

Though I don't think it's too much to ask that she switch parties in exchange for the chair...

And disband the Dept of Fatherland Security.

15. I think Reconciliation is Plan B here
And it is nos so much that we should not pull the trigger. I just think that we are terrible at messaging. and that the vociferous response of the repukes will be that we used parliamentary shenanigans to force a bill on the majority or Americans who do not want what the Dems put together.. That will be the message and we are so terrible at messaging that it will come back to bite us hard in the ass in 2010.

If we had better messengers than Reid or Pelosi.. I would say yeah, but I fear that approach because we don't.

19. Any further bargaining undermines the arguments for the bill

If the bill is good then it should be put through with reconciliation

If the bill is not good then we shouldn't be giving up anything for it.

14. Yeah, but...

I think it is an unlikely scenario. If she left the Senate, her seat would be in play for the Democrats, with Tom Andrews a strong likelihood to challenge. She isn't going to do that.

I just realized I misread the post. Yeah, I'd give her a chairmanship for a vote on HCR, but only on the condition it actually passed.

I'd make a deal with the devil to get Lieberman out of his committee chair. Though, I'd prefer to give it to Snowe.
