Senate passes compromise tax cut bill, 81-19 (update 2)

Senate passes compromise tax cut bill, 81-19

The Senate has passed the tax cut compromise by a vote of 81 to 19.

The measure now goes to the House, perhaps as early as this afternoon, for approval.

Among other things, the bill would extend for two years tax cuts that were set to expire on Dec. 31. It also extends long-term jobless benefits for 13 months.

Updated to add this from TPM

<...>

Before they passed the plan, Senators considered an amendment by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who spoke out against the bill for nine straight hours last week, that would have replaced the payroll tax credit with an extension of the Make Work Pay Credit, imposed an estate tax of 45 percent on estates worth more than $3.5 million and provided a cost-of-living-adjustment of $250 to seniors, veterans and the disabled dependent on government benefits. It failed 57 to 43.

<...>

Almost the same as the Senate votes on the Baucus and Schumer bills.

Update 2: Wow, 15 Democrats voted against Sanders' amendment. Roll Call:

Baucus (D-MT)
Bayh (D-IN)
Bennet (D-CO)
Casey (D-PA)
Hagan (D-NC)
Kohl (D-WI)
Lieberman (ID-CT)
Lincoln (D-AR)
Manchin (D-WV)
McCaskill (D-MO)
Nelson (D-FL)
Nelson (D-NE)
Pryor (D-AR)
Udall (D-CO)
Webb (D-VA)

3. Well, Laura Ingraham is screeching that the vote should be delayed
until the Repubs take the House in January and come up with a "better" bill. I assume "better" = no unemployment benefits, and permanent tax cuts for the wealthy.

7. Who cares what they come up with in Jan.? If they kill this bill
they can just filibuster in the Senate what the Repuke House sends them in Jan. or the Pres. can veto it.

9. Sure, but then everyone's taxes go up. Major campaign promise broken.
Not necessarily good for the immediate economy, either.

10. Why Would The President Veto His Own Bill?
And I think the fact that it got eighty one vote a filibuster seems unlikely.

12. I was referring to the House tanking this bill, letting the tax cuts
expire, the a GOP led House comes up with crazy tax bill in Jan. then the Pres. and Senate do their thing.

Wasn't referring to this bill.

14. What Would Happen In That Instance
What would happen in that instance is we would get a crappier bill sometime in January and the averaqe voter would blame the Democrats for their dilatory tactics.

11. It's a bad Bill
Edited on Wed Dec-15-10 01:48 PM by Johnny2X2X
but, it's way better than anything that we could have gotten in January. To the Congressmen on the left now throwing fits, I ask this, "Where the Hell were you in the months leading up to this?" You wait until now to get angry?

Someone should someday really force the Republicans to reveal what they really want and follow it to it's logical conclusion: No taxes on those making over $1 Million a year, after all, these are the "job creators" and the "producers" right? 20% Tax for those making 200k-1M. 60% Tax on everyone else, after all, the working man is lazy and produces nothing and should have to pay for the Superman Millionaires.

16. Those ARE 15 of the most conservative Dems in the Senate.
With the exception the two Colorado guys and Kohl (all of whom I don't know too much about), I'm not surprised at all with those names.

18. I'll say it again. Democrats in Congress are a bigger
Problem than the President. There is only so much he can do when there were so many Democrats that wanted the Tax cuts as much as the Republicans. One day people will realize this.
