The best thing I can say is that I hope this isn't true (re: delaying DADT repeal)

But if it is...I'm just... :wtf:

If it's true it just means that whenever DADT repeal is weighed against something else...something else is more important.

We are told our troops are important --well, how important are they?

--------------------

Is The White House Stalling DADT Repeal In The Senate?

"There's an effort to get this done if we have time to do it," Gibbs said.
...
Sources on the Hill are telling me a big reason DADT repeal isn't moving faster comes right from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Despite President Obama's public support for repeal, with DADT stacked up against the START nuclear arms reduction treaty that Obama carefully brokered with the Russians earlier this year, the White House is putting its legislative push behind START.

...
Obama, it seems, wants START to come first. And with the White House pushing START (in daily phone calls from top White House officials, according to one source on the Hill), Obama could end up standing in the way of DADT getting done.

"The White House has been crystal clear that their number one priority in this lame duck session is START," said one Senior Democratic aide.

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), who's been pushing for a vote this weekend on DADT repeal, told MSNBC Thursday that the START treaty would still be ratified by the new Republican-heavy Senate that will be sworn in on Jan. 5 -- and thus isn't as pressing as DADT during the lame duck.

DADT repeal may pass the new Senate, but its prospects are a lot less assured. And besides, whatever bill the next Senate passes (if it does pass a bill) would have to be approved by the new Republican-controlled House, where the chances for repeal are expected to be really grim.

With that in mind, Lieberman said, DADT really should come first. His spokesperson, Erika Masonhall, put the position succinctly.

"The votes for repeal will be there," she said, referring to the current Congress. "Why delay the vote any longer?"

1. why can't they do both...
DADT and START and stay as long as they have to in order to get both done (including the DREAM Act).

2. I think Reid will go around Obama
and schedule it anyway. I'd be surprised if it didn't get done.

3. If Reid brings up the bill and GOP isn't ready to vote for cloture DADT DIES....
Edited on Thu Dec-16-10 07:37 PM by Clio the Leo
... remember last week?

Despite what the GOP moderates are saying (they support repeal) they have NOT said they'd be willing to vote for cloture. Like it or not, the GOP can kill anything the Dems want to do in the Senate ... votes have to be brought to the floor in a way that doesn't piss them off. Having gotten the tax deal vote, their "thing" is now the START and the Omnibus. They dont want those passed. If Harry tries to vote on DADT before the GOP gets their way on the Omni and START, then DADT would fail.

It's that simple.

4. And Reid just killed the Omni....
.... which, in theory, would help bring DADT to the floor. ..... Unless the GOP comes up with something else they dont like.

And folks still want to blame the President. The GOP has mindscrewed us all big time.

5. So true
Funny how there seems to be very little criticism of Republican tactics, lies and hypocrisy on this board these days.

It's all the President's fault. :eyes:

6. Or maybe Reid thinks a stand alone DADT repeal is a better first bet
Collins objections about debating time was when DADT was in the Defensen Auth bill, remember? She doesn't have that excuse with a stand alone repeal, plus she's co sponsoring the dang thing.

Reid may have played this one just right.
