THE MAJORITY AND COMMON SENSE WIN ! Thanks Dems and President Obama !
Edited on Fri Dec-17-10 05:52 AM by RBInMaine
I strongly oppose PERMANENT tax cuts for the rich, and did not all even like the temporary extension, but Obama and his team FORCED the RePUKES to damn well cave on a lot of progressive measures, ended their logjamming, and in the end we have a deal supported by large majorities of the country, averted a big middle tax hike when we could least afford it economically or politically, ended some of the uncertainty blocking economic investment, and got the best deal possible under the circumstances. It would have been a political death knell for Dems to have blocked this bill at THIS juncture when we are struggling out of a recession. On Jan. 1st, taxes would have gone up dramatically on the middle class, and Obama and Dems would have been blamed. Like it or not, the rules are the rules and numbers are the numbers, and compromise, the very foundation of the nation, MUST occur if anything in this REAL world is going to get done.

Make no mistake. Did you listen to the debate? MANY RePUKES despise this deal because for them it doesn't do nearly ENOUGH for the rich and super rich, and it does too much for the unemployed and middle class. BUT THEY CAVED because they knew THEY would have been toast if they didn't.

We WILL continue to FIGHT over the idea of PERMANENT tax cuts for the rich, and we WILL WIN on that argument in the long run. BUT, THIS is what had to happen at THIS juncture.

I think we are in for a pretty good 2011 for our party if we stay united and focused on our plan of economic progress, rebuilding infrastructure, and investing in American manufacturing and make those differences CLEAR as compared to RePUKE trickle down and logjamming.
RePUKES can't just be against everything. They have to be FOR something, and Americans want them to compromise too and get things done. If they don't, out they fucking go in 2012.

In the short term, right now, this compromise had to occur. SMART that enough House Dems supported it to make it happen and that Obama led on getting it done. It will have a net positive impact on the economic short term, and those who supported it will be rewarded. A large majority of our population supports it. And again, make no mistake, on PERMANENT tax cuts for the rich, we WILL fight again soon and WILL win on that question too.

4. you thank Obama for this?
Edited on Fri Dec-17-10 06:25 AM by bowens43
We got NOTHING in this deal. Obama caved to his Republican leaders. This was shameful. This was stupid. This was unnecessary and it wasn't a compromise it was complete and total capitulation and it wasn't supported by the majority. The majority wanted the tax break to expire for the top 2%.

Doesn't all that spinning make you feel like vomiting?

Hopefully, we'll have a successful challenger for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2012. This should end Obama's political career.

5. Well said.
No, it wasn't a perfect bill, but what is? Politics is the art of the possible, & anyone who thought we'd get everything we wanted was fooling themselves.

I wasn't happy about tax cuts for the uber-wealthy, but to me, Job One is making sure the jobless get their benefits extended. The quickest way to a double-dip recession is to cut off unemployment. As we all know, that money goes directly back into the economy; the jobless don't sit on their money, like banks or those who can afford to.
If there's no political will, or will on the part of the private sector to create jobs, unemployment MUST be extended.

9. Unrec'd. Sorry but this was a total betrayal of promises made
during the campaign that got him elected. His word is becoming meaningless as he flip-flops on one campaign promise after another.

What next, SS cuts? With the same apologetics, 'we couldn't get the votes', the Repubs made me do it. It was the best we could get?

When Bush was in the WH and votes like this came up, I was never disappointed, I expected the worst, the excuses, etc. I used to expect more from this president, and every time ended up disappointed. But not any more, I don't expect him to fight for those who elected him, so no more disappoinments. I expect him to go after SS now. I only hope that Congressional Democrats will at least fight for that last remnant of the New Deal, but I wouldn't count on it. What a huge slap in the face this administration has been to those who worked so hard to put them in the WH.

15. Trust me, I am real.
1) Offshore drilling, slammed McCain in the debates over his support for that.

2) Bush tax cuts. Slammed McCain over extending them in the debates.

3) Opposed mandated insurance and slammed both Clinton and McCain in the campaign for their support of it.

4) Opposed appointing a Deficit Commission and slammed Clinton for her support, stating that there would be no secret, behind-closed doors commission in his administration, because these issues should be debated in Congress and commissions were nothing more than an end-run around Congress.

5) Swore he would never agree to touching SS, no cuts of any kind, no privatization. We'll see, but I'm betting on the now familiar script each time he flip flops on an issue.

6) End the war in Iraq. Never going to happen now, 50,000 troops still there and a huge army of mercenaries. Troops are necessary legally in order to keep the 'contractors/mercenaries' there as the law states the private army is there to 'support the troops'.

7) Close Gitmo

8) When asked about holding war criminals responsible, stated that 'if there was evidence of crimes of course that would have to be looked at but didn't want to spend his FIRST term totally focused on it. Now, we know, there will never be accountability as we know he even went so far as to take an active part in stopping Spain from the job he would not do.

Should I go on?

12. Anything "we got" was more than offset by what "they got"
This was at best a 2 for 1 deal on the surface. 1 for the poor and middle class, for every 2 for the rich.

And every bit of short term stimulus that is generated from the bits and scraps thrown to the rest of America will be completely neutered and rendered long term useless because of what they gave up to Republicans. This isn't just "We don't want the president to win" it's that the policies that he conceded on and gave on were much more bad for the country in the long term big picture, than the things he got are good for the country in the short term.

But we already learned long ago that he's more concerned with short term, cable news cycle victories to put in the check column and things that his fan boys and girls can add to "the list" and put on the Whatthefuckhasobamadone.com site than what he is concerned about what is in the best interest of the country as a whole.

14. Tell you what. If the SOTU has NOTHING in it about "tough choices" ahead, this was a win.
Otherwise, it was just a big old "left-wing" assist to "Starve the Beast."

28. k/r for common sense and reality
The reality is this: The President could either temporarily extend tax cuts and make the upper-income tax cuts a campaign issue, giving us more time to educate a relatively clueless general public about how bad they are for the economy, or he could have sat it out and let the Congressional Repubs take the wheel in trying to shove PERMANENT tax cuts down our throats come January.
