President Obama to meet with labor leaders this afternoon

President Obama to meet with labor leaders this afternoon

In the afternoon, the president will meet with approximately a dozen leaders from the country's largest labor organizations to discuss strengthening our economy, spurring growth, and creating good jobs for the American people, along with other issues of importance to working Americans. Secretary Solis will join the president and the labor leaders at the meeting.

Also this afternoon, Mr. Obama will sign his tax cut deal with Republicans into law.

Expected attendees of the meeting with labor leaders include:

AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka

United Food and Commercial Workers President Joe Hansen (Chair, Change to Win)

National Education Association President Dennis Van Roekel

United Steelworkers President Leo Gerard

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten

American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees President Gerald McEntee

Service Employees International Union President Mary Kay Henry

United Auto Workers President Bob King

International Association of Fire Fighters President Harold Schaitberger

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers President Ed Hill

National Association of Letter Carriers President Fred Rolando

International Union of Painters and Allied Trades President Jimmy Williams

8. The backstabbing that saved so many of their jobs?
Without Obama's provisions in the stimulus package, including aid to states, the number of state and municipal employees, teachers, and other unionized workers would have been greatly decimated. Money went directly to retaining their jobs and preventing even more cutbacks.

And let's not forget the UAW. You think they are mad at him for saving GM and their livelihoods?

all those saved jobs? Retraining for what? IT? Teaching? Construction?

he had talked to these people first, BEFORE he talked to all the CEO's. Now it just looks like he is going to try to talk these people into being 'reasonable'.

I may be a vocal critic of the President, but I will always support him when he takes action that furthers the Dem cause. Let's hope that something good comes out of this meeting.
