Poll question: Sense of DU Poll: Is Obama trying to cut Social Security Benefits
I'm seriously curious as to whether DUers think he's taking a knife to it.

Please, none of the normal internecine fighting! Feel free to post facts, not nastygrams.

Also I'd appreciate if you kept this kicked so it will be seen for a while and we can get a good sample.

Thanks!!!

1. He is a smart guy surrounded by smart guys...
The idea that they don't know that they have handed the Republicans and other enemies of Social Security a key to the fortress is absurd.

14. He's smart, but is he wise? Not so sure

I am not sure he understands the significance of what he is signing on to. I think he has trouble understanding how policy and compromise will work out in the long run. In my opinion he has embraced the life and philosophies of the elite, but in his own way he still sees himself as a fighter for the "little guy".

It has become apparent that he believes in some of the basic tenants of Reaganomics and the semi libertarian world view, but I think he may believe that he can make that ideology work for the common man.

At it's core, the modern idology (yes I spell it that way on purpose) of the US is becoming a Darwinian world view. On some level, even many "liberals" believe that it is necessary for many to suffer in order for others to "rise to the top". That is the ultimate lesson of industrial competition.

Unfortunately, as time goes on he reminds me more and more of not Reagan, but Bush I. Bush I was not malignant, he was just so enclosed in a narrow world filled with rich people and Darwinian idology, that he could not grasp the ways his policies contributed to suffering.

3. You don't need a new poll for that. Just look at this one:

That should tell you where DU stands...and how much "facts" matter.

5. I don't pretend to know what Obama is thinking.
However, his actions and statements to date certainly do not give cause for optimism. He has already said that "all options are on the table" regarding Social Security. Not a good sign. I fully expect him to talk about the "tough choices" we have to make in his next SOTU address.

6. I think that he has opened the door for the dismantling of SS
I don't think that he realizes that this what he has done, but it is what he has done just the same. The Obama administration will be remembered as the administration that paved the way for the dismantling of the most successful and most needed government program ever conceived
