Weird.....
Obama is poised to sign his tax cut deal.....
and we are told this is so wonderful....
and yet,
I checked and checked on the "Greatest Threads", here on DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND....
and no OP praising this move.

Weird. There is one OP that states that Dems CAVE.....that has quite a few recc's.

And also - there seems to be no celebration on the Dow Jones....

Well, one thing is for certain. These are no longer the Bush era tax cuts. Obama owns them now. And one more thing to consider regarding those who are vociferously defending this as grand stimulus.....that is all she wrote. There will be no more stimulus in 2011. NONE - no jobs program, no infrastructure reinvestment, nadda. 858 billion over two years with no direct incentive to drive unemployment down.

1. I have not seen the posts calling this deal wonderful, could you please post some links for me?
I have seen people it is the best we can do with what we have, but that is certainly not calling it wonderful.

6. Oh, I have honestly never seen those threads. I thought I had a better understanding of what was
actually being posted here on DU. I thought OPs, such as yours, were using strawman arguments. I was wrong.

11. Do you see anything in those OPs that state or imply that the tax cuts for the rich are GOOD?
Edited on Fri Dec-17-10 05:48 PM by CakeGrrl
No.

I doubt you will find ANYONE here who wants tax cuts for the rich or thinks they're good, including me.

But do I think this deal was the best thing to do? Right now, and given the circumstances in Washington, yes.

Do I think it will have long-term implications that will play out to the Dems' benefit in combatting the Republicans? Yes.

So, is the poster above using a strawman? YES.

12. I see your point, but the OP and those links seem to referencing the "deal,"
not just the tax breaks.

14. The distinction is importnat
The majority of the bill sucks, all to get a 13 week extension of unemployment.

Since most extended families have some one unemployed, why did Obama not take on this issue like he did his campaign. In stead of siting in his office playing Let's Make a Deal.
He had 60+% support on that issue and could have called out the Republicans if he had personally gone to the public.

He keeps saving his political capital but it is draining away faster then he is using it up.

3. They shrunk the US Gov't and drowned it. Mission Accomplished.
Obama and the Democratic leadership capitulated without a shot. "We have peace in our time."

7. No celebration on the DOW .... Bwahahahaha!!!!!
Yea, the DOW is only up, let's see, from 7500 when Obama took office to around 11,500 now.

And wait ... DU isn't happy about this bill passing???????

Have you been in trapped in a Chilean mine? A loud portion of DU HATES Obama. What, you expected them to REC the bill's passage???

Last, I LOVE the dire predictions. Reminds me of the predictions that we were about to head into a new depression when the DOW hit 9800 this summer. Oh NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10. YUP.
The DOW doesn't go up or down when they've known the potential outcomes for months. The market factors in both outcomes.

And in this case, the outcome was very predictable.

Add to that the fact that this is the Friday before Christmas, and a YAWN from the DOW is totally expected.

15. The DOW is up because corporations are sitting on wads of bail out cash
And due to the fact that third world demand is still increasing. It does not reflect the US economy much if at all.

13. What stimulus can you get out of Sir John of Orange or the Senate?
You realize the Senate is our "Liberal" house of Congress now?
