We Should ApplaudThe Republicans Who Helped Us Overturn DADT
Edited on Sat Dec-18-10 11:48 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
Just as it was appropriate to applaud the Republicans who helped LBJ pass the landmark civil rights legislation of the 60s.

This was neither a Democratic nor Republican issue but a civil rights one...

1. Well, for cloture!
As I understand it, they've only voted to proceed. Now they have to hold the actual vote.

But yes, I agree we need to thank those who supported advancing the vote to repeal.

16. Heh. She's REALLY pissed at the GOP leadership for dumping her overboard.
I will not give Scott Brown an ounce of credit for a vote he cast purely out of self-interest, however. That asshole knows that the teatards are abandoning him and that without Democratic votes he'll get steamrolled in 2012.

8. Brown still irks me...but yea, how many of them, 4? This is Progressivism!
As I've always said. Progressivism can happen by both Left and Right and not just the left. Obviously with just the left side---it would never have happened in Congress.

11. Vote breakdown.
As per The Washington Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/18/AR2010121801729.html?hpid=topnews

Fifty-seven members of the Senate Democratic caucus and six Republicans -- Sens. Scott Brown (Mass.), Susan Collins (Maine), Mark Kirk (Ill.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Olympia Snowe (Maine) and George Voinovich (Ohio) -- voted yes. Four senators -- Jim Bunning (R-Ky.), Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Joe Manchin III (D-W. Va.) -- did not vote.

12. Intresting
Edited on Sat Dec-18-10 02:23 PM by Robbins
With exception of Manchin who didn't vote all Democrats voted to end debate.

Lugar who has shown some willingness to repeal DADT did not vote for cloture but did vote for cloture on Dream Act.Strange.

Voinovich who Is about to leave Senate voted for cloture.

Murkowski Is starting to show her being teabagged In primary and winning in WriteiN Campagin Is making her a more Independent Republican on a few things like this and Dream act.

Surprised Kirk voted for cloture since It IS awhile before he has to try to fool Illinois voters again he Is moderate.

While good Brown voted for Cloture don't forget this could be an act designed to help him In 2012 General Election If he can
survove against Tea Baggers In primary.

Nice to see Snowe followered through and joined Collins In voting for cloture.

18. Agreed. Credit where credit it due, on this issue.
They're still dicks about everything else. And, frankly, I think some of them voted for it because they knew it was going to pass anyway and they didn't want to be on the wrong side of history. But still, a yes vote is a yes vote.
