7. 3 GOP - Lugar, Murkowski and Bennett of Utah |
|
Edited on Sat Dec-18-10 01:45 PM by karynnj
It stinks that this would have gotten cloture if those 5 Democrats were yes (one Democrat didn't vote)
I think that Murkowski's "encounter" with the tea party - and beating them - has freed her. She was on the right side on both of these and likely on Start.

Murkowski voted for cloture on this and DADT.I think on some things she may be more reasonable now.Palin screwed up by helping to TeaBagger her Into primary. Now that she won as writeIn Candiate she Is going to go her own way on some things.I also suspect she will support Start.
Bennett Is surprise.I never saw him as a Moderate Republican despite what the Tea Party said.
I am also surprised Lugar voted for Cloture here but didn't on DADT.

9. I wasn't surprised with Lugar on this - he is a co-sponsor |
|
My view of him is that he is a thoroughly decent man, though very conservative on social and economic issues. He is excellent on foreign policy. I think he was actually a far better chair of SFRC than Biden was - always very courteous to everyone and allowing Democrats to go over there time if the questioning were productive. I noticed this most with Kerry, who was often signaled by Lugar to continue. When he finished, Lugar would thank him and explain that he let it continue because it was useful. Now, with Kerry as chair, they have worked very hard to jointly set a civil tone.
Likewise, the DADT vote disappoints me, but doesn't surprise me. He is among the oldest Senators, and there is no issue where people's positions are more correlated to age than this.

ran as a conservative and faces the voters in 2012. One slip and he is toast in WV. This gives us a picture of how he will vote next session.
Not saying that this is right, just the way I see it.

6. That's what I was afraid of. I just heard that he wasn't even present in |

the Senate during the vote - I was hoping there was a legit reason, but it was probably just a political move.

My Democratic Senator here In Missouri Mccaskill voted to end debate.I was happy to see that.3 Republicans voted to end debate. Lugar In Indiana showed on this He Is a rare sane Republican. Also notice Murkowski voted to end debate. It appears being teabagged In primary and winning In writeIn Campagin Is making her a more Independent Republican on som things. The more conservative Democrats voted with Republicans although the fact Mark Warner,Webb, and Bill Nelson stayed with the Democrats on this Is Intresting.
