2. Basking in the afterglow of two or five Wild Turkey and Cokes here... Fired up and Ready to Go...
I've been celebrating since Bayh announced the results, but now I'm wondering...

Are we back to the day before DADT passed? I ask because, as you know, before DADT being gay and in the military was no walk in the park. Not that it's been a walk in the park since, but what is NOW the official Pentagon policy on gays serving in the military? I have to admit, I didn't read the bill except for excerpts that were posted here, so I can honestly say I'm not sure.

My daughter asked me about that via text message this evening, and I had no answer.

Where do we stand now as far as gays serving in the military goes?

4. No, the policy changes to a new policy - not the previous one
Many Senators have said it means that gays can serve openly. I just posted the transcript of Kerry's and Lugar's appearance on This Week, Senator Kerry said:

KERRY: Well, for the country, it means that our citizens will no longer have to lie and live a lie on a daily basis or be denied the opportunity to serve their country. Gay people have served the United States with distinction. They've won awards. They've given their lives all through our history. We had a policy that asked them to lie about it. They no longer have to do that.

I believe it fulfills an enormous promise of equality in our country. It's an historic day.

3. Ending DADT will make ending DOMA even easier
Granted it may be a couple years since the Repigs taking over don't have the courage to vote for repealing DOMA. Today's repeal of DADT was a case study in how you need votes on both sides to make laws pass.

5. We only need two party's votes because of the stupid way this country is run
all of our other victories have been one party victories and have been just as legitimate as any other victory.

6. Progressives knew DADT was bullshit nearly 20 years ago when ...
the DLC first proposed it. Don't hold your breath.

7. You somehow found a way to get your favorite bogeyman into this thread, huh?
The "DLC" proposed Dont Ask Dont Tell?

An interesting piece of revisionist history. More like then President Clinton proposed gays being able to serve openly, couldnt get there, and fell back to Dont Ask Dont Tell.
