Dems: Obama-GOP tax cut package will kill Social Security
Edited on Sun Dec-19-10 10:12 PM by brentspeak

By Michael M. Gleeson - 12/18/10 08:59 AM ET

Democratic critics of President Obama’s tax cut package say it will lead to the end of Social Security.

Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), who voted against the legislation, said on Thursday that “this is the beginning of the end of Social Security. Next year Republicans are going to want to continue to undermine Social Security, and we are not going to be in any position to borrow the money under whatever new rules the Republicans adopt to make it whole,” he said.

Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) told The Hill that the tax bill -- which passed the lower chamber on Thursday night -- is a “trojan horse” designed to kill the Social Security program.

“My view is this is like the magician. He has got people looking at the estate tax. Meanwhile, he is putting his hand in your pocket and taking your Social Security,” McDermott said.

Thank goodness the Democratic party has some real Democrats left in its ranks.

10. Is it not true that we do?
I am a deficit hawk and being so was a large part of the reason I supported Howard Dean.

The question is WHERE are those cuts best made? Many of us thought a trillion dollars on non-stimulative tax cuts is a large waste of money. It would be a shame to see Obama try and make that up by cutting the most successful of our social programs!

22. It's actually worked quite well in previous recessions.
Reagan raised taxes during a recession.

Clinton raised taxes during a recession.

3. If it doesnt happen its because the ploy was too transparent
Just like the deficit commission was full speed ahead....... until the liberal media started paying attention to their plans.

5. Why were Simpson and Bowles selected to run the 'Deficit Commission'?
Can you name any two other people from their respective parties who've worked so hard at slashing Social Security?

4. " said on Thursday "
Maybe the media can write these stories next week using the same quotes again.

The bill does no such thing. The President is not going to cut or end Social Security.

9. I guess we will see after the state of the union.
So far Obama has preformed down to manys worst expectations and all the things we were told would NEVER happen (he wouldn't sign a bill without the public option, he won't extend the tax cuts for the rich, he would ban lobbyists from his administration) have been smoke. The concepts of ending combat in Iraq is mostly in words only, as we just change the titles. Afghanistan is very much the quagmire we all knew it would be.

So now, much like we heard rumors he would abandon the public option, cave on tax cuts for the rich, allow too big too fail to continue (which were all denied by the usual sources at the time, as we were told about the grand chess game Obama is playing) we are hearing rumors that he is going to suggest cuts to SS in his state of the union.

So I am forced to wonder... will this one truly be a rumor, or will it be like all the other rumors that ultimately came true.

We won't know for sure until AFTER the state of the union address on January 19th.

6. "real Democrats"?
"Show me your papers," eh?

All fantasies aside, do "real Democrats" vote against unemployment insurance and middle class tax cuts for those who desperately need them?

13. lol this is the equivalent of me posting something by Krauthamer....
..... sure, it's an entertaining read, but the author in question kills the argument.

Cant wait for DeFazio to rise to his feet during the State of the Union and shout "YOU LIE!!!!" ... or perhaps HE would say, "SOMEBODY TOLD ME YOU LIE!!!"

.... should be fun.

23. Yup, and majority of them were against allowing the taxes to expire for the rich.
But don't try to explain that to these people. Obama is ALWAYS the enemy.
