Larry David "Thanks For The Tax Cuts!" NYTimes
This is very funny and sad. I'm glad he wrote this. But, I wish he didn't have to:

THERE is a God! It passed! The Bush tax cuts have been extended two years for the upper bracketeers, of which I am a proud member, thank you very much. I’m the last person in the world I’d want to be beside, but I am beside myself! This is a life changer, I tell you. A life changer!

To begin with, I was planning a trip to Cabo with my kids for Christmas vacation. We were going to fly coach, but now with the money I’m saving in taxes, I’m going to splurge and bump myself up to first class. First class! Somebody told me they serve warm nuts up there, and call you “mister.” I might not get off the plane!

I’m also going to call the hotel and get another room so I don’t have to sleep on a cot in the kids’ room. Don’t get me wrong — I love a good cot. The problem is they tend to take up a lot of room, and it’s getting a little tougher in my advancing years to fold it up and drag it to the closet. I mean, I’d do it if I had to, but guess what? I don’t! Not with this windfall coming my way. Now I get to have my own room with a king-sized bed. And who knows, maybe I’ll even get some fancy bottled water from the minibar. This is shaping up to be the best vacation I’ve had in years. ... more at

19. Believe me, they're never happy. I used to work with the very rich.
Edited on Tue Dec-21-10 02:42 PM by Lorien
they were never content with what they had. The reason was simple; in America, we're trained from day one to believe that wealth and toys bring happiness. When the rich have piles of wealth and toys and still aren't happy, then they become possessed with the idea that they "need" more to finally find peace and joy. So their entire lives become devoted to getting as much as they possibly can for themselves, and damn the costs. If it costs others their livelihoods, that's OK. If it costs the rich their marriages and families, that's OK too; getting richer is all that matters. It's their reason for being, period. That's why the tax cuts for Billionaires will only make things far worse in America. Their addiction is being fed. You've given the mouse a cookie; now he wants the whole fucking planet!

24. nothing is wrong with me, I just don't understand why the rich are
so hated. it's like the polictical commercials they run in oklahoma. every other word is I stopped the liberals, I hate liberals, liberals are destroying america. I know some rich people some are dems, some are repugs, I don't think just because they don't want to pay high taxes (over 35%) is crazy or greedy to me.

what's wrong with you really.

31. Dude over the past, every year for the past 5 years the rich have seen their wealth has grown 5% +
Edited on Wed Dec-22-10 03:58 AM by mrdmk
The lower 98% class (that is most of us) saw a 2% decrease (some more, most a lot less) in wealth. Something is very wrong with this picture!

Now with the new tax plan, if you are single and making $20,000 or less, you will see a tax increase. Also with the new tax plan, if you are married and making less than $40,000 a year, you will see a tax increase. The poor are getting fucked by the rich. By the rich, I mean those fuckers in House and the Senate because most of them are worth more than a million dollars.

Not to mention, has a whole, the infrastructure of this is either broken or out of date. All safety nets of this society are being looked at like a virgin at a Aztec ceremony. I am assuming you are under 65 years of age, do not count on Social Security for your retirement, not to mention, a lot of 401k's have gone from a tidy nest-egg to a non-existence status, in some cases you owe your broker money.

With a I got mine, go screw yourself mentality in this society, this country is going to hell in a hand-basket and fast.

If you cannot see that, then you are not looking...

BTW, I do not hate the rich, I have a disdain for their actions. That is all!

6. Why Do People Have To Reduce Every Issue to "Hate" or "Love"
"good" or "evil"?

The majority of Progressives don't "hate" the rich. They "hate" a system where the most well off of us don't pay a fair share of the burden for running our govt. We have the absurd situation wherein we're fighting two wars, and yet, we gave out tax cuts.

Additionally, tax cuts for the wealthy lead to a concentration of wealth among the very few which inhibits public and private investment in research and development of new technologies and the creation of new businesses.

Imagine how more powerful our economy would be if our policy was: you'd only get tax cuts if you invested in start ups and research & development.

10. Hate is a strong word, but most rich people get rich by making money off of people who aren't rich
often to the extent that the rich make their dough by taking advantage of everyone else.

17. Are there unlimited resources available, and unfettered means of delivery?
No? Then fat bastards shouldn't hog more than their share of the pie.

Apologies to Mr. Marx for dumbing down his great analyses of the class struggle, but there you have it.

27. This is not new. Google: "tragedy of the commons"
One of the (many) problems of the American Dream myth is that it disregards the scarcity of resources in the environment, leading to the delusion that capital can simply be created from nothing.

8. Well, about 2 million people who were about to lose unemployment compensation
will be happy, too, because without extending the Bush Tax Cuts for the rich they wouldn't have gotten any help. It might also be that without extending the Bush Tax Cuts for the rich that we might not have gotten a repeal of DADT. So we have to take the good with the bad sometimes.

who needed the unemployment benefits they'll now get could write a serious article about how the compromise helped save him/her and their family.
