67-28 Obama win
The Senate cleared the way today for a major arms reduction treaty with Russia, as a sufficient number of Republicans announced support for the deal and the White House predicted victory.

Senators voted 67-28 to cut off debate for the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia, and a final vote could come as early as Wednesday.

At least 10 Republicans said they planned to vote for START; supporters need only nine GOP votes to win the two-thirds Senate vote necessary for ratification.

"We remain extremely confident," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., one of the Republicans who announced he would back the treaty, told reporters, "I think it's going to pass and more than just pass."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, said he was pleased with the GOP support for a treaty that "will make America safer and restore our leadership in global efforts to stop nuclear proliferation."

The Senate voted to end debate amid some Republican criticism that it could undercut U.S. missile defense efforts.

Obama and Senate Democrats said the treaty will have no effect on missile defense, but will instead cut the number of nuclear weapons and assure inspections of Russia's nuclear arsenal.

2. Yes, too bad these republicans did not see the light earlier.

But I also wonder how the wrong senator from MA ends up quoted in this article while nowhere was indicated the leading role of Kerry and Lugar. This is puzzling.

3. Well, Obama is finishing a lot better than most of us thought he would
i'll give him that.

but i fear what he learned about triangulating and what he might offer up to earn GOP goodwill next year --and if that will gut our social programs, or needlessly compromise them.

7. "They" say this is a big win for Obama. I guess so. It's a great thing. But most people
don't care about things like this. It's political junkies, the media, politicians, who follow these kinds of things.

Average Americans care about jobs and their paychecks.

8. Rachel spelled it out tonight. A must see.
She said President Obama had achieved 85% of what he promised in his first term in a record two years. If you step back a bit for some perspective, it really is quite breathtaking.

9. Yes, VERY impressive when you look at the big picture and
the scope of what has been done in the face of a ridiculous amount of opposition and derision.

The historical perspective ought to be something.
