Obama Stands by Opposition to Gay Marriage - but Feelings "Evolving"
Posted by Brian Montopoli

Asked at a press conference Wednesday about his opposition to gay marriage in the wake of repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, President Obama stood by his position - but also suggested he was open to changing his mind in the near future.

"My feelings about this are constantly evolving," he said. "I struggle with this. I have friends, I have people who work for me who are in powerful, strong, long-lasting gay or lesbian unions. And they are extraordinary people. And this is something that means a lot to them and they care deeply about."

He continued: "At this point, what I've said is that my baseline is a strong civil union that provides them the protections and the legal rights that married couples have, and I think that's the right thing to do. But I recognize that from their perspective it is not enough, and I think this is something that we're going to continue to debate, and I personally am going to continue to wrestle with going forward."

Mr. Obama added that "this is going to be an issue that is not unique to the military, this is an issue that extends to all of our society and I think we're all going to have to have a conversation about it."

2. Probably strikes the right tone. He's talking to 300 million Americans here.
Vociferous voices on either side of the issue. Feels like he's inching us all over the right way.

4. Translation:
I've come a long ways, and I really don't have a problem with gay people getting married.. however, more then half the country still does. So, i'm going to sit in the middle and try to get re-elected in 2012 so I can actually do something about it in my 2nd term.

That's the way I read it... if he's any more "Pro-Gay" at this point, the independants that he desprately needs in 2012 might just stay home (it's not like they're gonna vote for a Palin type either). So he plays to the middle left.. gets elected, and hopefully does something to DOMA in 2013. Is it perfect? NO... but in this biggoted country - probably the best political path, like it or not.

5. I can only imagine what his secound term will be like...
...when he doesn't have to worry about re-election or compromising and can just focus on what he thinks is best for the country.
