Muslim??? Who said that Obama is a muslim
Obamas attend church in Hawaii...

President Obama made a rare trip to church Sunday, attending a late-morning service with his family at a chapel on a Marine base near his vacation home in Hawaii.

Obama last attended church Sept. 19, a month after the release of a poll showing the number of Americans who believe he’s a Muslim was increasing. Sunday marked his seventh time he’s gone to church since taking office.

The president, first lady Michelle Obama and their daughters, Sasha and Malia, sat in the front pew at St. Michael’s chapel during the hour-long service.

The president, wearing dark brown slacks and a Navy blue polo shirt, took communion, sang hymns and listened attentively as the chaplain read from the book of Matthew and delivered a sermon about the day after Jesus’ birth. Obama turned to smile at his daughters, who were seated in between their parents, as he sang “Angels We Have Heard On High.”

The celebrant, Greg Cates, told the congregation he was especially thankful to have the Obamas in attendance. Cates began the service by asking the parishioners if any of them have a family member deployed at war – about half a dozen people raised their hands – before turning the service over to Chaplain Steve Moses.

Moses worked the president into his sermon as he told a story of when doctors discovered he had a heart problem during a routine physical.

While at the hospital to undergo surgery the chaplain said he asked, “Why doesn't God just heal me?” He’s recovered from the heart surgery and joked that maybe the reason God put him through it was so if he were ever preaching to a president, he wouldn't have a heart attack.

The congregation laughed.

Moses ended sermon by asking parishioners to recommit themselves in the new year to God.

Obama’s church-going habits have been a prominent subject of discussion since the 2008 campaign when he became embroiled in a controversy over his pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, in Chicago. The president, whose father was from a Muslim family in Kenya, has also battled rumors that he is a Muslim. A Pew Research poll released in August found that one in five Americans – 18 percent – believe Obama is a Muslim, an increase from 11 percent in March 2009.

1. He's retro-fitted his limo as a mobile mosque. That's how he can "go" to church

5. That's another thing that pisses me off about this whole 'Obama is a Muslim' thing
As if being Muslim is some crazy horrible thing, but being a Christian is just fine. Remember John McCain in 2008? He basically said, 'Obama is not a Muslim, he's a good man'. I mean :wtf:

Of course the media never called him out on that and praised him.

How can Muslim Americans and Muslims around the world look at the US and not think that the US is bigoted against Muslims? 2 wars in the Middle East and support for Israel only reinforces this perception.

6. I think
people who trash Muslims don't KNOW any, and only have the impression of Islam that the corporate media gives them

7. I'm not going to do this justice and will screw it up, but a DUer told how she
worked with a couple of Muslim women. They'd go out to lunch (or whatever) and these women would always have some money to give to the homeless people. Not only did they give them money, they would hold their hand, talk to them, look them in the eye. I found that so moving and touching, and so unlike anything I've ever seen/experienced in our Christian Country.

So yes, I agree that even if all Muslims aren't as angelic (seriously!) as these women sounded to be, that people who trash them just don't know them. :(

3. Remember the whole Rev. Wright thing in 2008?
You would think that the Rev. Wright issue would have buried this Muslim meme once and for all. I mean, how is it even possible for a Muslim to go to Church and have a Christian Pastor?

It makes absolutely no sense.

13. They accused him of being both a radical antiwhite Christian and a Muslim in 2008
Edited on Mon Dec-27-10 02:53 PM by ShadowLiberal
Even if it doesn't make any sense the idiot rightwing nutjobs will still accuse him of it. A lot of them hate him just because he's black, and want a socially acceptable excuse to hate him, because it's not ok to hate him for being black. The fact that his father was a Muslim just gives them a convenient excuse to hate him. And heck, his father being a Muslim isn't enough for some of those nut jobs, some of them accuse his father of being both a Muslim and an Atheist, even though that's clearly impossible.

The real issue of concern here is the fact that the number of Americans who believe the 'Obama is a Muslim' smear has grown since the election. That shows racism towards Obama is growing, which is deeply alarming when you consider it's implications to the rest of America.

Let it go.

"...battled rumors that he is a Muslim" -- what an obnoxious statement.

14. Encouraging and promoting a belief that Obama is a Moslem
is simply another long term political strategy.

This way, when Romney wins the GOP nomination, his cult/religion will be less of a sticking point with RW fundies...because, look at the option! GOP will need the fundie vote and Romney generally has not done well with that group..the GOP needs the South, very badly!

15. Even if he were a muslim
so what? Seems like we're indulging their bigotry by taking up this issue.

It's interesting that he has attended church and has extensively quoted the bible since the poll came out in September showing 20% of people think he's muslim. Could there be a connection?
