Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) was awake in her hospital room and recognized her husband, several media outlets reported late Saturday.

Giffords is now in critical condition in the intensive care unit and has been responding to doctors' commands, according to media reports.

The Twitter account of Fox 11 News Arizona said that a family friend told the station that Giffords "woke up from anesthesia & spoke to people in her room & recognized her husband Mark Kelly."

The brain such a risky place to be hurt. It is one our most well protected organs and surprisingly resilient...realistically she's got a long road ahead. I do see this as great news and she's on her way too a good recovery from what I can see and definitely hope along with you.

6. There are conflicting reports on this

Someone posted this in GD a couple of hours ago. Another news station reportedly called the hospital to confirm and was told that she hasn't woken up yet.

10. When I posted this information it was 1am eastern. Not 10pm.

However I will say when things are not coming directly from the police, hospital, or friends and relatives that can be seen it should be taken with a grain salt. However, first off---tweets irk me. I also sincerely doubt that a phone call will get you anywhere. I don't trust Politico---but claimed a family friend informed them. All are suspect admittedly though.
