SPTimes Buzz Blog: Obama will visit Miami high school Friday with Jeb Bush
(President Obama will be attending several Democratic fundraisers while in south Florida, as well.)
MARCH 01, 2011

Obama will visit Miami high school Friday with Jeb Bush

President Obama will travel to Miami Central Senior High on Friday and be joined by former Gov. Jeb Bush. The White House said the president will discuss "how winning the future in education will require investments that promote a shared responsibility among everyone involved; reform at the state and local levels; and focus on achieving results."

Also attending will be U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

White House: "Central has been awarded Title I School Improvement Grant funds which support the improvement of persistently low-achieving schools. The Central community has chosen the turnaround model for school improvement, which involves replacing the principal, rehiring no more than 50% of the staff, and granting the principal sufficient operational flexibility to fully implement a comprehensive approach to substantially improve student outcomes. Central has implemented rigorous interventions and shown steady progress since the 2005-06 school year – the additional resources made available through the federal grant are supporting these efforts.

Miami Dade County is taking turnaround work seriously. The school district created the Education Transformation Office (ETO) to support their 19 persistently low-achieving schools, dubbed the “Rising 19.” The ETO offers these schools intensive, individualized support on areas ranging from operations, to curriculum and instruction, professional development for teachers, and strategies to engage parents and families."

1. The "turnaround" model is mostly privatization by another name.

In other words fire them all and rehire whomever...another way to union bust.

2. Not all the teachers were fired. Hope those who were fired deserved firing.

Bad teachers should not be allowed to continue to 'not teach' our children. I think we can all agree with that.

4. It is a random firing of teachers. It is for a purpose...nothing to do with educating kids.
But then I think most people realize now that it is just another form of union busting of public employee unions being done by our party as well.

I really think most people are catching on that firing all or 50% of a faculty has nothing to do with the good or "bad" teachers, but has everything to do with who is going to get to run the schools and profit from them.

But then some are still in denial.

7. I answered you below, my posting is messed up through proxy. I will post it here.
"Turnaround often or usually means a private management company will take over.

I can NOT link to any of my posts on this topic, but I have written a lot about how the turnarounds work.

When DU is back for me and I don't have to use a proxy, I will answer your question with data. Right now trying to find anything here is impossible.

Find out more about Miami's Education Transformation Office (ETO) and I will look it up as well.

There is no need to fire half or all of a staff. It's a silly corporate-minded way to look at education....

10. If it is a failing school, public, it is fair game.
Obama and Arne have both publicly stated their goals are for more charters, and the turnarounds and charters go hand and hand are not public.

It is a "turnaround" from public to charter.

8. Probably. Rhee is Rick Scott's right hand woman now.
She is calling for 8% of Florida's teachers to be fired.

6. "Turnaround" means that often, quite often, a private management company
will take over.

I can NOT link to any of my posts on this topic, but I have written a lot about how the turnarounds work.
