What will it take to force Walker to back down? |
|
Several Rethug defections on the bill? Is that even possible?
What will it take? Because I don't see him backing down - EVER.

That would probably be about the only thing, since common sense, common decency and smart politics do not seem to do the trick.

7. An introduction to his new cellmate 'Tinkles'. |

Seriously... I can't see anything other than criminal charges or courts striking it down as unconstitutional. Walker has now dug himself in too deep, attached his entire political future to this bill. I'd love to see some honest Republican defections, but rumor has it that he's threatened to withhold RNC financing from them if they don't march in goose-step.

19. Why would he back down? He has the votes, and he knows the Senate dems won't stay in IL forever. |
|
I agree with you that I can't think of any reason he would back down. Hopefully he can be recalled next year, though that will be too late to stop his budget repair bill.

He won't back down. He has the votes and the Senate Democrats can't stay away forever.
These protests may make Walker and the Republicans so unpopular that the Democrats can win big in 2012 and 2014 and reverse all his union busting. The firestorm may also cause other Republican governors and legislatures to think twice before attempting the same thing.
On the other hand the risk is that his peak unpopularity will be during these protests and once he gets his bill through people will forget. Chris Christie in New Jersey saw his ratings plummet initially when he attacked the teachers unions, but his approval numbers have since gone up to around 50%+. People have short memories, and don't understand the long term significance of what Walker is doing. If the sky doesn't fall after the bill is signed, some people may applaud him for being tough.
People are pretty ignorant about these issues, and they like a winner.

20. Strike! Public workers could stage "rolling strikes," with a different sector striking for 2-3 days |
|
and then return to work. The next day a different sector and so on. Or, ALL state workers could make a picket sign and amass at the state capitol.
