Conyers Rips Obama, Emanuel For 'Bowing Down' To GOP On Health Care

Sam Stein: 11-19-09

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/19/conyers-rips-obama-emanue_n_363702.html

..........."I'm getting tired of saving Obama's can in the White House," said Conyers. "I mean, he only won by five votes in the House, and this bill wasn't anything to write home about. The public option is only available, which is the only way you manage cost and get some competition to 1,300 other health insurance companies, the only way he could have got that through is that progressives held their nose and voted for it anyway."

Asked if the president had shown enough leadership in the health care debate, Conyers facetiously wondered why Press would ask the question.

"Of course not, of course not," he said. "You know, holding hands out and beer on Friday nights in the White House and bowing down to every nutty right-wing proposal about health care, and saying on occasion that public options aren't all that important is doing a disservice to the Barack Obama that I first met who was an ardent single-payer enthusiast himself."

.......

I am VERY disappointed if anyone cares! It will be hard to get behind Obama the way I did in 2008. Very disappointed!

3. Babylonsister - I said for those that hadn't seen it - I know it is old news but very pertinent!
This is one of the main reasons the health care issue is where it is today! And I stand behind Conyers 100%! I believe his remarks ring true and will for years to come!

5. Conyers has become a sad shell of his former self, and it didn't
just happen this year. He's been all bark and no bite for years.

Did you read this? The President asked to chat with Conyers, but Conyers couldn't be bothered. Says a lot about the man imo.

How dare Conyers not chat with His Savior Obama?! Gasp! I wouldn't bother either. And it does indeed say a lot about the man. Good for him.

11. It's become painfully obvious that there are people here who have made it their
call in life to keep the Obama hate going. It doesn't matter how old the 'issue' is or how much they have to twist a story to prop up their anti-Obama stance. I come here several times a day to try to catch up on the news, but all I see are negative threads concerning our president. If someone posts a positive thread, the naysayers show up to respond- whether it's relevant to the post or not. It's disheartening, to say the least. You, and a few others, are steadfast in calling the nonsense what it is. Thank you for doing what I don't have the patience to do.:loveya:

16. Disheartening is the people who act like blind sheep! It is time to speak up!

What is democracy for if not to voice decent where it is righteous? It is true what Conyers said and if you think it was OK for President Obama and Emanuel to go behind closed doors and meet with the health care companies and now keep everything under raps when President Obama said in his campaign that everything would be open then you belong in that herd. I am a progressive who believes that President Obama did not do enough in this case. I support some of the other actions he has done but this one falls short! This is NOT hate it is truth!

8. You can attack Conyers all you wish but I think what he says has merit.
Maybe he just got tired of playing games. Who knows? It looks like true progressives on the hill are tired of fighting and not having the backing they should have to complete the fight.

4. Let it rip then! Let's hear about it.
I only know that he is one of a few speaking out in a forceful tone about what he has seen as a lack of leadership coming from the Administration viewpoint.

I also said that what Conyers said is pertinent to the current situation we are in right now!

And you point is what he said isn't relevant? Hell yes it is! I am 100% behind him!

You know the hero worshippers apparently should be Congressmen and Senators.

20. Funny, I didn't see their post as LBN, so I don't know why something that was said weeks ago is
considered not worthy to discuss? It's been done many times when relevancy is implied in the OP.

22. Ted Kennedy said EXPLICITLY that he would NOT be on that side of the fence again.
He did it once and it was his single biggest regret. If you're going to honor the man, at least learn a little fucking bit about him.

Kennedy to Obama: 'There will be struggles' over health care

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/09/09/kennedy-to-obama-there-will-be-struggles-on-health-care-reform/

The White House has released the text of the letter from the late Sen. Ted Kennedy that President Obama referenced in his address to Congress:

(In part).........

There will be struggles – there always have been – and they are already underway again. But as we moved forward in these months, I learned that you will not yield to calls to retreat – that you will stay with the cause until it is won. I saw your conviction that the time is now and witnessed your unwavering commitment and understanding that health care is a decisive issue for our future prosperity. But you have also reminded all of us that it concerns more than material things; that what we face is above all a moral issue; that at stake are not just the details of policy, but fundamental principles of social justice and the character of our country.

And so because of your vision and resolve, I came to believe that soon, very soon, affordable health coverage will be available to all, in an America where the state of a family’s health will never again depend on the amount of a family’s wealth. And while I will not see the victory, I was able to look forward and know that we will – yes, we will – fulfill the promise of health care in America as a right and not a privilege.

.........

I do not believe that this bill even comes close to this vision. No one knows exactly what Sen. Kennedy would have thought of the way this has been handled, but we can see he truly thought we would have affordable health coverage for all!

19. oh, good grief! Bringing up a person's avatar honoring the truest liberal of all and claiming he'd
call the person a fool??

How PATHETIC!

I am one who has made repeated comments of dissent against the president's actions these past 4 months, and I've never seen this poster make a comment challenging the state of things, and the OP was an ARDENT Obama supporter in the primaries from the get go - I was not. So, when I hear other people finally coming down on the Obama-Mess and free-for-all for Corporate America, Wall St & the banksters, I see another mind that is working and seeing that Obama is very much a questionable president.

Here's a great post that details where Barack has went wrong - http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Bernard%20Weiner/4

You may not agree with the majority of us here, but you should at least know this - your obnoxious attack on someone's avatar, honoring a deceased liberal hero, perhaps the greatest of them all says more about you as a person than anything.
