Reid: Republicans Scapegoating Teachers, Public Employees To Launch Ideological Attack On Rights Of Working People

Washington, D.C.—Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement regarding yesterday’s vote by the Wisconsin state legislature to strip the collective bargaining rights of public employees:

“I am disappointed in the Wisconsin legislature’s decision to trample on the rights of teachers and other public employees. I have always supported workers’ rights in Nevada and across this nation. In these tough economic times, when state budgets are strained to the breaking point, everyone must make sacrifices. That includes public employees, many of whom have already conceded to unpaid furloughs, pay cuts and salary freezes, and some of whom have even lost their jobs. Workers in Wisconsin were willing to make sacrifices and tighten their belts, like families around the country. But Governor Walker and Wisconsin Senate Republicans have stubbornly refused to negotiate or compromise, refusing to budge from their extreme proposal.

“Last night’s vote to strip Wisconsin workers of their collective bargaining rights wasn’t about tough budget decisions. Republicans simply scapegoated hard-working people who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and launched an ideological assault on the right of working people in America to organize and collectively bargain. The workers affected by this decision aren’t getting rich teaching children to read or cleaning floors in the State House. Republicans should stop attacking middle-class people working hard to put food on the table for their families.”

1. Public employees join: gays, muslims, aetheists, brown people, the French, the
Germans, people from San Francisco, Chicagoans, East Coast windsurfers, immigrants, hippies, Californians, environmentalists, African Americans, college students, academics and scientists, the disabled, progressive tax supporters (damn socialists), war heroes, people who need govt welfare, womens' rights advocates, women, New Yorkers, wage workers, Canadians, MSM, democrats of course, ACLU supporters, Acorn, NPR, vegetarians, Hawaiians....and many many more groups as targets the GOP has thrown under the bus, offended, smeared, lied about, ridiculed, used as instruments of fear and hate so that they can polarize the nation, raise money, and scare people into voting. Now, teachers and public employees are lazy slobs dragging our economy down. Next month, it will be someone else....but NEVER the corporate elite and the journalists and politicians that serve them.

I fall into the at least 6 of the above categories so I must not be a 'real american'

There isn't a low road they wouldn't take. Ends always justify the means with them. Slamming through legislation illegally is NOTHING next to murdering women's doctors, illegal wars, election rigging, forging documents, falsifying scientific findings, finding ways to rob the nation of trillions of dollars, and stepping on third world countries to do it.

Today feels a bit like 2004 to me....Mind boggling, astonishing, disappointing, eye opening, scary.

5. Reid should introduce legislation to include union workers as a class protected by civil rights
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 02:47 AM by Major Hogwash
Since that is how the union workers are being attacked -- as a group!!!

Along with women, who were attacked as a group.
Along with blacks, who were attacked as a group.
Along with people of other races, who were attacked as a group.
Along with people of other creeds, who were attacked as a group.
Along with gay people, who were attacked as a group.
Along with people of different religions, who were attacked as a group (like today when Peter King disgraced America and the entire US Congress with his ridiculous hearing).

And others, who were attacked as a group.
Who were attacked as a group.
As a group.

When someone says "There ought to be a law . . .", this is one of those times.
