First Lady to plant White House garden Wednesday
I know, not important in the scheme of things, but I like this tradition; spring has sprung!

First Lady to plant White House garden Wednesday
March 11, 2011, 2:26 pm by Christina Wilkie

First Lady Michelle Obama will take part in the third annual planting of the White House Kitchen Garden on Wednesday March 16, according to a statement Friday from the East Wing.

The 1,500 square foot vegetable garden was one of Obama's first initiatives as first lady, and she has since employed it repeatedly to help encourage healthy eating on a national and international scale.

The first lady (shown here in 2009) will be joined at the White House by local school children for Wednesday's planting.

During the past two years the garden has produced more than 2,000 pounds of fruit and vegetables, many of which have been incorporated into the menus at state dinners, Obama family meals, and throughout the White House kitchen operation.

Leftover produce has been donated to Miriam's Kitchen, a Washington area food shelter which President Obama and his family have visited multiple times.

5. That was my first thought too!
They might have those removable curved covers though that go over the raised garden areas.

12. Not for cole crops it isn't.
DC is in Zone 7, so it is about the right time for them. Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. prefer cooler temperatures. The same goes for spinach and lettuce. These vegetables can tolerate a little bit of frost, and I'm sure they'd get covered if there is a late frost. They tend to bolt and/or turn bitter when it gets warm, and it gets warm fairly quickly in these parts. I suspect the tomatoes and other warm weather crops will will be started in pots and sent to the greenhouse.

3. Wow. Third year planting! Time is flying. I was obsessed with year 1's garden.
Was excited every time there was a new article and/or photo of the garden released.
